Does anyone with an R know if the mode selection has any real impact on the mpg? I usually leave it in Race because its much more fun but it had me wondering.

Ah yeah it definitely would. That means you have your gearbox (are you DSG?) in S mode all the time... that holds onto the revs for longer (way too long imo) before upshifts. It also revs higher at idle and the 4 pipes are always active too. In short, you're burning more fuel.

Personally I can't stand Race mode. The fake noise is too much and DSG in S mode is infuriating.

I have a manual. Got it a few months ago. I will play around with using eco and normal for a while and see if the mpg starts to increase. What are you averaging with the dsg?

Do you notice that it idles at higher revs when in Race mode? The engine / exhaust sounds raspier (if you ignore the stupid fake noise)? I've never driven a manual R so I'm not sure what effect Race mode has on the gearbox, if any...

I average a measly 26mpg. My commutes are fairly short though and I've only got 16k kms on it after 14 months.

As for the Modes, I set it to Individual, putting everything as "Sport" except the gearbox and the sound actuator.

It definitely idles at higher revs in Race mode. Have noticed that alright.

I am averaging between 24 and 25mpg at the moment. Very short commute and under 4k on it so far.

Will play around with it. On the longer spins, I usual average around 30-32mpg. Again, I mainly sit in Race

Sounds similar to me so. I have seen as high as 38mpg ish on a very leisurely Sunday drive and I've averaged 31-32 on a few Galway-Dublin motorway trips. But my usual commute is short and a bit stop start, so that brings it right down to 25-26. Not something I give much thought to tbh as my mileage is low but the R is definitely not a car for big milers. The frequent fill ups would get boring quickly!

How have you not disabled the Soundaktor fully already I'll never know?!

I've actually grown to liking the sound of my car now that it's gone, can hear the exhaust a lot more and it's nice low tone. Only takes about 30 secs to turn it off as well once you have an OBD Eleven. Well worth it! :D

With the MODE button in the R you can turn it right down, which I have done. It's still not completely off but it's acceptable...

Off was the only acceptable for me to be honest. Don't think I'd ever go back. :)

what sort of MPG can be got out of the 1.2 TSI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭Neilw

I kinda like the soundaktor noise.

I'm using race mode more and more, I'm used to firmer suspension and the roads I'm on are pretty good. I flick the gearbox to normal though as it's annoying how it holds revs.

I've 9k Kms on mine since January, my average is 30mpg nearly on the nose.
    I don't do much city driving, it's mostly 80/100 limits I'm in.

    You're a rare one! :D

I'm not sure what it's like in the R, but the GTI sounds like a diesel at low revs with the Soundaktor on, really bad reverb off it when pulling off in 1st. Then the constant hum off it when cruising for no real reason was intolerable for me.

Still get a decent burble now but it's only from the exhaust itself and a very slight intake sound too.

In the R in Race mode (or Individual mode if you have the actuator set to Sport) there is a bad reverb from it, as Dar83 says. It actually can make the dash / sun visors vibrate! Irritating and completely unnecessary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

I guess it depends on what you want from your car for sound. The windscreen to be used as a fake sound vibration device, or... not. :pac:

I think I was just especially sensitive to it coming from the ST, where the sound was natural and gorgeous, haha. VW's implementation is just kind of irritating and it definitely has you notching up the stereo a couple of times extra due to the ambient sound it creates.

Anyone else have a slight issue with the passenger seatbelt? When I am driving, I notice the sound of the metal bumping off the cabin at times. A bit annoying  Doesn't seem to lock away nicely when not in use..

That's strange because they've actually got a fold in the belt material on that side to help prevent that... so when the unused passenger belt hits the B pillar it should be the nylon material hitting the pillar and not the metal buckle. If I recall correctly this problem dates back to the early MK5 Golf and the fix has been in place since then.

Check your passenger side belt and make sure that extra fold of material is there near the buckle.

Another thing that can rattle over that side is the height adjuster on the seat. Sounds similar but a little black foam sorts it. I thought mine was the seatbelt in the Leon and it drove me mad but copped onto it in the Octavia and it worked a treat. Same seat base as the golf.

    I highly doubt it.

It won't look like that either, just lazy journalism from Autocar.

I thought they canned the prospect of a Mk7 Golf R400 some time back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

A 100bhp power hike is not / never going to happen. They may do what Audi did with the S3. 7 speed DSG with a 10-15bhp power hike.

See the tiguan R has been spotted in testing. Handsome looking motor.

A Tiguan R would be high on my list of follow up cars I must admit.

    Once it's not diesel :)

The SQ3 or QS3 or whatever it's called here is diesel, the 313bhp diesel whereas it's petrol in the uk and Europe from what I can see.

I don't think there's been an SQ3, certainly not diesel. The SQ5 was diesel everywhere. The RS Q3 is/was 2.5L petrol but I suspect was rarely if ever sold here.

Solved this issue... turns out someone left a large screw in the passenger door storage compartment! :ermm: I checked around yesterday. You were right with the seatbelt. Not really possible for the belt to make the noise.

So.. anyone tempted into changing for the 2017 model?

If so, what are you trading in and what have you ordered?

Any deals to be had? What are the trade in offers like?

Elect a clown... Expect a circus
