This is going to be like moving from Gamecube to Wii in terms of graphics. Great if you're a 3DS owner, it's a big step up. As a Wii U owner it's more of the same. Isn't it handy that there's no backwards compatibility and now Nintendo can charge another €50 for slight upgrades of their Wii U counterparts? I wait to see what Nintendo do with the servers of Wii U games when Switch launches.

Some reports think there might be a backwards compatibility in a digital way, I think based mostly on Nintendo's answer to a question where they they won't play Wii U discs or 3DS carts.

Laura Kate Dale on Twitter, who has been very accurate with details and broke the story of the reveal, still believes the dock may hold some processing power.

"This information again came from sources A (Nintendo), B (Ubisoft) and D (Manufacturing). None could confirm whether the dock is a PlayStation VR-style processing box which helps power higher resolution play when docked, or if docking the console simply allows the handheld to overclock and provides better performance that way. All sources claim the hardware has an easier time running docked compared to when out and about as a portable.

Many on Twitter have drawn my attention to this interview with IGN where Nintendo state that “The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch… The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system.”

To that, I reply that they repeatedly use the words “main function” and “Main Console” here which still leaves a lot of room for clarity. I believe these statements were aimed at clarifying the Switch was not another Wii U style console rather than saying the dock won’t in any way alter game performance. You can’t play the dock without the handheld, but that doesn’t mean the dock won’t improve game performance"

She also believes the Joy-Con controllers have force feedback and motion control.

I asked Source A (Nintendo) why motion control support was not addressed in the reveal trailer. They said that the purpose of the reveal trailer was to show the console’s unique selling point in as focused a manner as possible. They say that motion support will be confirmed closer to launch, but that Nintendo does not want the brand messaging around the Switch confused at this early stage.

Source A (Nintendo) has since stated that the Splatoon and Mario Kart games in development, as well as Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will support motion control for things like gyro aiming, steering, use of the magnet ability in Zelda etc.

Better buy everything on the eshop Halloween sale just to be safe!

Well, if they were going to do backwards compatibility based on your digital account, let me just put it out there that up until just after Bayonetta, if you bought a game at retail you got stars, and those stars could only be redeemed once....

And let me also point out that if you bought DLC for a game you don't own digitially, the chances are you own the disk.

And that god damn it, we supported the Wii U and it's time we caught a f'king break. Complex licensing agreements and royalty payments aside if they are launching this console with a small platter of say 5 key titles but potentially hundreds of games available that you already own and - lets not forget, stars have been around since the Gamecube - potentially haven't played in years, this could ride a wave of nostalgia to the top. Your entire gaming career, in your oversize cargo pants pocket, everywhere you go.

Side note : I assume we're all switching to cargo pants now, so we can fit this monstrosity in our pockets?

They might just mean that 3ds and Wii U games will be available on the e-shop. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest! It would be nice to get a disk drive / 3ds cart peripheral to play those games, at home at least.

    Quite easily...

If that's the price the public can pay, I'm sure Nintendo pay a lot less...

That's a gigantic cost compared to a cheaply pressed disc.

This is where the opposition are at....
"Microsoft really is great at making up for lacklustre original designs with superb updates, while Sony's consoles get more and more Fisher-Price with each post-launch iteration"

The Game Carts could been done much cheaper if say they were not even be 1 per game,
instead one single cart acting as a security key to unlock the games on your Dock.

It could be one 128GB Cart for all games, holding as many games as it can fit.
And it has a 30 day lease from the dock that renews. Y
You could have option to buy any size Cart you wish 32GB\64GB\128GB\256GB the cost and number of games you bring is up to you.

That being said, it will be 1 Cart to 1 game for simplicity and resellers sake. But just putting ideas out there...

Either way I cant see carts being that expensives, and have the benefits of fast load times, durability and portability.

Interesting to see though what they are going to do here - if that price is for 128GB to a consumer, we could easily see 50GB carts in big budget titles.....

I believe the price of manufacturing carts has come down a lot in recent years compared to the old days when getting the chips proved difficult on the likes of SNES and N64...

Yep it has and the technology is accelerating all the time due to all devices becoming more portables and storage increasingly more important. The argument of carts ability to hold insufficient data isn't in the same realm as it was 10 years ago. They can also be manufactured in a much greater and cost effective scale too which proved a problem for Nintendo in the past.

Guessing that Mario glimpse is just a tech demo, but boy wilikers did I get excited at the prospect of a new, proper 3D Mario game*.

*3D world, I love you and all, but you felt like a side thing.

Totally agree. That was the best bit for me.

    Joint best bit.

Rumor: Switch to have a maximum battery life of 3 hours, multi-touch screen

Nintendo may have formally revealed the Switch yesterday, but there are still a ton of questions surrounding the system. That means there is plenty of room for rumors to surface leading up to launch in March.

Laura Kate Dale, who shared numerous pieces of correct information about Switch prior to yesterday’s video announcement, has been providing new unconfirmed information on Twitter. One source who she’s spoken to at Ubisoft states that the system will have a maximum battery life of three hours. Dale commented on a few other aspects as well.

Switch may feature a multi-touch screen based on what Dale has heard from a Nintendo source. However, it won’t be core to most gameplay. It would be there for things like menus, drawing, and for certain titles like a Super Mario Maker port. Additionally, Dale says all games need to be playable with the handheld in the console dock, and all Switch games will be playable without touch.

It’s also worth mentioning that Dale weighed in on the Switch Dock. Even though a Nintendo representative said yesterday that it’s mainly intended for charging and TV output, sources told her that it may provide additional processing.

Here’s what Dale shared on that front:
This information again came from sources A (Nintendo), B (Ubisoft) and D (Manufacturing). None could confirm whether the dock is a PlayStation VR-style processing box which helps power higher resolution play when docked, or if docking the console simply allows the handheld to overclock and provides better performance that way. You can’t play the dock without the handheld, but that doesn’t mean the dock won’t improve game performance.

You can read Dale’s full article here. It’s quite interesting, as she shares more insight about her sources and looks back on previous reports.

It is silly to pre-order anything that vague.

But can't really blame the retailers - the supply follows the demand...

Must call into my local Smyth's so.
I'm budgeting for around €500 for console and some games, hoping WiiU Pro controller will double for Switch duties too.
That smashing orangey one, I think Nintendo call the colour "Spice", they did when it was on the GC, that's the one I'd love....

Sounds about right for me. 300 for the console (presumably), 3 games for 50 quid each, then 50 on that pro controller.

Nintendo have confirmed the screen can't be used as a secondary one while using the tv screen, which isn't a surprise of course because it obviously needed to be docked.

Wasn't excited seeing the unveil yesterday but watched a few more times and I'm hyped.

Love the idea of a hybrid I just hope this delivers...

I think regarding the game footage shown it's good to keep in mind that a lot of it was probably video more than likely superimposed onto the screens, it wouldn't be comparative to actual footage when playing the game. The girl for example clearly wasn't playing the Mario game, I'm sure it was the same for the others.

So half the controller can be used as a full controller? Is that casual control mode?
