It's not an argument, I'm not sure why you think it is.
3rd party support will dwindle if the preferred preference is to develop on more powerful console

A null point if it please you, you know what I meant.

As stated, if it was all about going to the most powerful machine, all games would be on PC, if you have to include consoles then the PS4 only. Scorpio and PS4 Pro already means 5 way dev split (PC, 2 PS4s and 2 Xboxes), can't see the Switch being left out as it only has to topple Xboxs meagre sales record to at least say it has a market, and the Nvidia GPU hopefully points to a standardish architecture

Their was no mention of Nintendo in the short red dead trailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I didn't see any mention of any platforms in that trailer...

This is exactly the kind of thing I've always wanted! Genuinely excited about this. Time to start saving!

And are the motion controls all gone? That would be epic. No more flapping around like a dope.

True, I only mentioned it because some were speculating that they timed it to say its coming to Nintendo.

Could you see it being powerful enough as a console to run Red Dead 2?

    Unfortunatly not.

Red Dead is a timed exclusive to Sony I think?

I wasn't wholly expecting it to be announced for Nintendo anyway.

Edit: Some DLC content is timed

The 3DS is nearly dead as it is. Hasn't been a huge year this year, except for pokemon, and next year isn't hugely exciting either. I presume they'll give it support till around 2018 odd and then drop it.

More importantly... where do the amiibos go?

Over 20 million consoles in less than 3 years is far from a meagre sales record.

You really aren't understanding my point at all then

Like any system the games will, in the end, define it. The launch lineup is very important for Nintendo. The early signs is that the Switch has been received overall positively, some more info or an idea of games pretty soon would be a good momentum grower.

    Whhaaaaat? :O

The figures I looked at earlier were way lower than that, I take that back

Good question but a tablet doesn't have Mario or Pokémon.

Will be interesting to see if they are a big enough draw, one thing is for sure though, they need to get Minecraft on there.

While it may well be able to pull off consgole level graphics I feel this will be a 3DS replacement and maybe try and erode its way into the tablet market.

This makes the most sense. But in my opinion this isn't a competitor for the home market. It ticks the box of "yes I can dock this and use it on my TV" but that's kind of it really.
I'm sure it will do great things at the mobile end of the market. But for gaming enthusiast outside of the mobile market I just don't see it working.

I don't think so, it being less powerful than XOne or PS4 shouldn't matter to me as they're much weaker than PC, which is what I'm equating your points to

Regardless, all will become clear in time I guess, I for one have high hopes.

As an aside, should it not have third party support does the concept itself not blow you away though? It's a massive wow factor for me, even if I can only play Pokemon, Zelda and Mario on it

One of the ports on the stand

It will depend on the games of course but 'gaming enthusiast' is either quite vague or quite varied. The FIFA's and COD players probably won't be coming to Switch of course, but I would fully expect a lot of quality Nintendo titles and they might even surprise with 3rd parties from that list. It's quite a bit more than the 'mobile' market too in fairness, playing well known, relatively high end games on the go is an untouched dynamic that could go either way, but mobile makes it sound lot less than it actually will be.

This has nothing got to with my point. I don't see third party support for the device being plausible

I'd have to see it in action and play it myself before I'd pass judgement on it but I'm not really sold on it. It's a nice concept and the interchangeable parts are smart but the tablet with the side controllers looks a bit chunky and unwieldy for mobile gaming and small issues like the headphone jack being on the top over the screen are a bit annoying and aesthetics wise the main controller is pretty ugly - I don't think the console is really that pretty overall. It'll be interesting to see how the console performs and what the launch games are like.

Because it will be weaker than its counterparts from Sony and MS?

I like it at first glance but what is this gonna cost I can't see it being cheap

I like the docks look, it's very sleek but I'd agree the controller being awkward looking, I hate how the WiiU gamepad feels.

A nice option is having the controller with you and just using the screen as a portable TV, handy if you've a man bag but probably awkward for commutes and such.

There's no where else to put the headphone jack in fairness

just got to watch the trailer there, it looks great, nice premium look to it, the ad seems to have been aimed at an older audience than usual, i wonder were the mariokart and splatoon ports from the wiiu or nintendo switch version or just demos. cant wait to hold one in my hand. cmon march :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

The promo pictures of the controller do make it look an unusual shape but in the video when he's playing it on the couch it doesn't look as......bulky I guess. I guess it's just a wait and see to how it feels.

To be honest this could well be my first Nintendo console. Its seems to have lived up to the expectations I had for it, will come down to price.

When phones/tablets progressed to the point where they could play games other than candy pop or whatever it is, I thought that was the breakthrough, but having tried to play GTA 3 with touchscreen controls it was rubbish.

There have been tablets with the controls on the side before, but every review highlighted major flaws. I know Bluetooth controllers work, but when commuting you don't have anything to prop the screen on.

This built specifically from the ground up, with games designed for controllers sounds ideal, and hopefully fits comfortably in two hands for playing

Encouraged by the seemingly built in portable local multiplayer capacity. Local MP is something that's been neglected recently outside some stellar indie titles, but is still IMO a big draw (one of the strengths of the Wii U: Mario Chase with friends is still a joy).

Like most things, a slick trailer is not much to go on, and the reality of the features could make or break this console. But above all a properly social - not just online - game console is something that could be a neat niche to establish :)

For solo play, though, I think I'm going to value this more as 3DS successor than a Wii U one. The 3DS is definitely showing its age, and truly console quality portable games will be a welcome development for Nintendo. Might finally encourage them and the Pokémon Co make that bigger scale Pokemon game they've always bizarrely shied away from.

Finally I can come into this thread without some stupid gif eating my data

Looking at the picture of the console and controller, it looks like the NFC reader for amiibo is on the left hand side. The LEDs seem to indicate the player. And is that gap near the bottom of the back of the dock for the power cable. There's no gap on the othr saide. I'd say the dock also contains a Hard Drive and the 32GB mentioned is for the portable system only and can probably transfer saves and data between the 2.

Think I read somewhere that it's the final or whatever the PS4/XBone version is called.

Wonder when publishers can start announcing games as coming to Switch (Have to get used to not typing NX)

Looks good to me, I will be watching to see what details are revealed for it. And wonder when the media will get a go.

I'm surprised at the number of actors in that video and no leaks

Nintendo have owned the portable games sector since there was a such thing as a portable games sector.
Given their track record on that matter, and it's undeniable, why would anyone speculate that they might not somehow own it with this product as well?
I don't doubt that a significant number of purchasers are going to use this console almost exclusively as a handheld device, and another proportion will use it as a home console exclusively too.

Nintendo have never failed to illicit the support of third parties for it's on the go systems, no reason at all to see that trend ending with the Nintendo Switch.

Some of the posts seem just like the same trawling that we had with previous Nintendo hardware releases.
I'm only surprised no one has tried the "Nintendo is for kids" argument yet.

Also, looks like the rumour of no d-Pad was true.

As usual, Nintendo just making consoles for kids!
