Nintendo NX Will Not Be Named Duo So Everyone Can Calm Down

People looking for information on the upcoming Nintendo NX console have to be careful. There are a lot of people who claim to have information and are just either misinformed or trolling and this latest NX rumor is an example of the latter.

A photo of the supposed final name for the Nintendo NX console was revealed as a part of a “software partner briefing” held by Nintendo.

The photo was made to look like it was taken with a phone with the bottom of the invite being blurred out for some unknown reason. The top of the invite had the name Nintendo Duo on it, which would make sense considering the console is supposed to have handheld elements.

Well, after forums and message boards picked up on the image, the creator came forward on Twitter to show off their photoshop masterpiece.

Any information about the Nintendo NX has been non-existent, making fans desperate for any news (just browse the Nintendo NX subreddit and you’ll see what we mean). Still, a Wall Street Journal report indicates the reveal will happen in October and a Nintendo of Europe rep confirm ed fans will not have to wait until 2017 to get information regarding the NX.

So be patient Nintendo fans. The NX reveal is coming… eventually.

Reading their Twitter account they say they didn't make the original. Just that they remade it in Photoshop in 5 minutes to prove a point.

I'd love for someone to create something that's so believable that it forces Nintendo out of their self imposed silence.

Nintendo NX May Support Smartphones and VR; 20 Games in Development: Report

    .........

French site Gameblog has released some more details which have been translated to English on popular gaming forum NeoGAF. This time it includes information confirmed by multiple sources within the games industry who are developing for the platform and have development kits.

For starters, around 20 games are in development and Nintendo hasn’t shared all of the NX’s “gimmicks” with developers yet. So much so that it being a hybrid of portable and home console not being the only “surprise”. Much like Eurogamer reported earlier, there will be detachable controllers and oddly though, no dock for the handheld component of the NX. Rather a wireless dongle to allow for TV upscaling. Games look on solid on the handheld screen and graphically are on par to the PS4. Along with this, what you can play on the go will run just fine in your living room as well.

Developer feedback on the NX’s development tools has been good. No surprise considering Ubisoft’s CEO said something similar a few weeks ago. Despite having an architecture that’s different from the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, porting games over should be relatively easy. A host of remasters are in the works including Skyward Sword, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Smash Bros., and a host of Wii and N64 games.

Gameblog also claims that Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake will be coming to the NX as well. Considering how troubled development has been for the former, and that the latter was just announced a year ago, we wouldn’t keep our hopes up. Square Enix aside, other developers onboard include Ubisoft, PlatinumGames, and Capcom.

On the topic of Ubisoft, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is being discussed but not confirmed yet as is a Splinter Cell game and a Rabbids – Yoshi crossover.

Recently, Gameblog was correct in calling out the PS4 Pro’s reveal date of September 7 which lends a sliver of credibility to its latest report.

I hear the NX team and the No Man's Sky team are both missing, presumed dead, having flown together to an Antarctic base for a party.
Inexplicably, the last broadcast was that the console and game would be finished any day now, before someone in the background remarked that the neighbouring Norwegian base had a chopper incoming, shooting at a dog on the run.... no word since.

Maybe they're in the City in the Sky, listening to Spirit in the Sky while eating Pie in the Sky. Perhaps they Lie.

They should never have left THQ Nordic build an Artic base.

I saw that one concept drawing for the NX where it's like an updated WiiU controller. In my opinion, Nintendo would want to stay far away from this route. The battery life was fairly poor on the WiiU iteration, and the touchscreen thing is almost passé. The NX needs something totally new and exciting that changes the way people game in much the way that the Wii did. VR's a good candidate, but I suppose this would mean some beefy hardware from Nintendo, and they've dropped focus on technical grunt since the Gamecube era.

I find it hard to believe a mobile system would have graphics on par with a ps4, considering it is only 3 years old and doubles as a space heater. Still though decent quality should be possible, i guess more along the lines of a 1080p ps3.

It might be possible. After PS3 haemorrhaged money, Sony went with cheap off the shelf parts. Going with cartridges makes it more feasible for a few reasons like reduced battery drain and taking up less space in the housing unit. Then there's rumours of the Tegra X2 chip which is both very powerful and doesn't require a fan. Saving more space and battery life. Cost is the biggest barrier, probably not the technology.

maybe this extra delay in the official announcement has given them time to increase the specs. Nintendo have been falling behind since 2006 with significantly weaker hardware than the competition. With PS4 Pro and Scorpio next year, Nintendo's hardware is going to look more weak than ever. I know they are not trying to compete with Sony and Microsoft but if their new machine looks 2 generations older than current machines, it's gonna put many people off buying it. Expensive prices considering the weak hardware and very large gaps in gaming releases just makes it even more unattractive. It's goes without saying I really miss the Nintendo of the early to mid 90s when they were producing cutting edge hardware and a very expansive library of great games regularly. I hope the NX takes us all by surprise and bring back the Nintendo I used to know and love.

Despite my previous comment about graphics quality, i think the nx is the right call. The sensible choice mighy be to make another x86 based console with similar specs with some off the shelf solution, which would let nintendo mix its own strong titles with ports from the ps4 and xbone. Nintendo have always shunned this approach and I cant but feel they would suffer for trying to compete for the same market, much like the xbone is. I do get your point though, if it had enough grunt it could get lucrative ports from ps4 and xbone.

I think combining the full sized console which has always has had mixed results, with the mobile market could be a shrewd move considering the pressure mobile phone gaming is putting on handhelds, having a powerful system that you can dock back home for the full experience would be pretty tempting as well as being able to play the same game anywhere. As i have gotten busier the older I get, hand helds become way more appealing, as I can play when out and about and instantly suspend if something crops up at home, so I defintely see the appeal.

So this week on 21st October is the latest rumour reveal date for the NX. Nintendo's next investor meeting is on or around the 26th October. You'd imagine they have to say something before then. But then Nintendo like to Nintendo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

Either they'll say something, or announce a delay. Annoying the people who buy their products is one thing and ignoring investors is another.

Does this mean that Nintendo is also a term for f**king people about?

There was a time I'd have disagreed but now, I think you might be right.

I have to say, my interest in the reveal is waning, as a result of the ridiculous delay.
A month ago it was all systems go, here it comes, hold onto your hats, but now it's just all a bit M'eh.

I'm sure the reveal will be a shock, a spot of awe and a modicum of excitement but right now, it's like being at a wedding and having nothing but cress and salad cream sandwiches while waiting the 6 hours for the bloody dinner to start.

My excitement peaks and troughs. It's actually peaking now again though.

I played a bit of PS3/PS4 over the weekend and it all felt a bit meh for some reason.

Then I jumped into Mario Maker and lost myself in Etrian Odyssey IV for a few hours which reminded me exactly what Nintendo offer.

Also Kimishima looks like a Yakuza boss. He even has the similar title of 'fifth chairman'. I like this.

I cant help but feel a January announcement would be best wait till after festive period then launching it in March/Easter 2017.

That works for certain companies like Apple, who are big enough that they can do a announcement and release in close proximity, days or weeks if necessary. Nintendo doesn't have that though, and they have absolutely nothing except Pokemon for the holidays. They need to start giving us information, or tell us its delayed for sure.

I'm similar in that my interest peaks and troughs but opposite in that the PS4 is the one constant gaming source for me these days - Super Mega Baseball and Dragon Quest Builders - the latter would probably make an excellent Wii-U game with extra features for the gamepad. The only Nintendo gaming I'm doing these days is on the 3DS.

But I have my fingers crossed for a Tegra 2 based beast of a tablet/console with the NX. :)

Dragon Quest Builders looks fantastic, might pick that up.

Like, PS4 pro isn't as exciting as the NX will be, or as enjoyable. But because we have a release date for it, a price, and know all the stuff about, I'm much more excited for an upgraded PS4 than I am for nintendo's new console we still know zero about.

So this is the week, right? Nintendo know the hype is goig to die down so now is when they hit us. Or "leak" some more details.

Emily Rogers and some verified neogaf insiders seem to be indicating something will happen this week or next.

Rumour: New Beyond Good & Evil Title Set to Be A 'Semi-Reboot' and NX Exclusive

    That old chestnut

In recent weeks you likely saw some reports in which Michel Ancel teased a new Beyond Good & Evil, which was then confirmed by Ubisoft. Now a report by LetsPlayVideoGames.com quotes sources on some more snippets of information for the project, perhaps revealing details on the second entry in this series.

This report is by Laura Kate Dale, who was also the author of the Destructoid report earlier this year that claimed the new title would be an NX exclusive. Though we consider Dale to be a reporter with some solid sources, hence our coverage of a couple of her previous NX reports, we've nevertheless marked this as a rumour. Sources can be wrong, after all.

Moving on to the report, it has some interesting claims; to keep it simple, below is an extract from that article, in this case from a source 'familiar with negotiations on the project'.

According to our source, the currently planned direction for the game is that it will partially retell Jade's origin tale from Beyond Good & Evil, flesh out Peyj's backstory, then continue to extrapolate on the ending of the original game. The intention is that players who have not played the original will be able to jump into the new game, which will feature a subtitle rather than a number at the end of its title, and understand both who Jade is and what drives Pey'j. It also seeks to provide closure to fans of the original wondering what the cliffhanger at the end meant for the series' ongoing plot.

While many existing fans of the series may be upset about the new game not being a direct sequel, the idea of modernising the original tale and fleshing out the world while continuing the story beyond where it once ended offers the series a better chance of an ongoing life than it previously had.

It's an intriguing move if true, but makes sense considering the long gap since the original Beyond Good & Evil on systems such as the GameCube. It is also notable that neither Ancel or Ubisoft has used the word 'sequel' in their recent communications about it, simply calling it the 'new' Beyond Good & Evil.

Dale also states that she's been informed by another source that the game is indeed an NX exclusive, and will have a CG trailer to be shown as part of the system's reveal (whenever that will be). The target release window is apparently Summer 2018.

A possible NX exclusive not out until Summer 2018?? Way to dampen my enthusiasm.
