Starbelgrade, mauzo, KeithM89. There's so much more but this forum has lost it's way a lot. I think a more comedic approach is needed here.

I think that although boards is "anonymous", that people still have an identity or attachment through their username however it still lacks context.

Sometimes I do want to make jokes that in real life, with my own friends would be no issue but I stop myself because I know that the majority of posters have not come across my username before and do not know where I stand politically or whether I am someone who is sexist, racist etc. and what could be meant as a joke would be taken completely out of context.

For expl in real life, there is an elderly man who my husband and I would chat to in the local pub if we go. He, sometimes makes sexiest jokes towards me that written down as one comment, would make him sound like an awful person but in reality, he is lovely and he is constantly praising his wife, not in a sexist way, and talking about his children and grandchildren however if I were to write some of the things he has said, online, it would come across that he was a dirty old sexist man when in reality, he is far from that.

I think in some ways, it's just the nature of the internet and written word. I don't know of anyone, genuinely, who is not capable of making a mistake in what they say and if you make things too pc then people have too much fear to risk putting themself out there for scrutiny, when the motive of what they were saying probably didn't really come from a bad place.

You need to have the courage of your convictions. Unfortunately Boards has sold its soul to mammon. This means pandering to popular ideologies.
Free speech is not offered by boards and at times they seem to take pride in this . I enjoy boards and like to hear what people think. I might detest what you say but I would defend your right to say it.

Edit - I have a few bans for attacking the poster but got away with calling a post a twàt.

Something which is prevalent today which wasn't say ten years ago is the concentrated effort made not to offend and to be accepting of all and everything. It should be ok to put your head above the parapet and say what it is you want to say.

I've never said otherwise. We have to ensure that everyone can enjoy this forum though. There's a balance.

Why should everyone enjoy it, isn't the point of a discussion board to debate differing views , you can't please everyone , so why try ,forums are overmoderated to the point of censorship , I've seen yellow and red cards handed out to some posters who don't quite have the linguistic dexterity to make a point as some other posters . 1 example would be the use of the term thieving travelling salesmen in hiace vans , everyone knows what the poster means but nothing is done about it, but the poster who straight up says most knackers are thieving scum is carded immediately,(I've seen it) language is a very powerful tool , not everyone has the ability to use it to prove a point in a non direct manner , if people are that easily insulted I suggest they take up knitting or bridge with like minded people

    Why should everyone enjoy it

I specifically said "can enjoy", ie, everyone should be welcome to enjoy the forum no matter their background. If it isn't to their particular tastes then there's not much we can do about that.

I miss posters like Pighead, Flutterinbantam and Degsy. They'd emerge out of the Thunderdome en masse to annoy people on AH with their views on crusties, stoners, socialists and neckbeards .

Maybe that's just it, there's plenty of other sites that are a free for all. If you want to say what you like then reddit or facebook.
But unfortunately for some, mods have a line. Everyone has a line though.

There is another forum i used to split myself laughing at for months. But now I don't find the stuff that funny. But the thing is, the content probably hasn't changed that much.
So maybe I've changed due to funny overload.

Maybe a significant portion of AH has just grown up and 'your ma' jokes aren't as funny cos.. Well... Yer ma is probably knocking on heavens door right now...

I remember when I stumbled upon After Hours after spending some time in other forums. I was pleasantly surprised that their was actually a forum where you could take the pee. I have noticed that freedom reduce significantly over the years.

I remember the olden days when everyone looked to the future - now it is the future and everyone is looking to the past.

We should have a special section in AH called 'Personal issues for drunk people'.

Taking the pi55 is fine, but I think what people are complaining about is not being able to 'stick their head above the parapet' to rant about travellers/Muslims/immigrants/women etc

I'm a bit confused as to how we can have people saying AH is gone too right wing, and at the same time other people say it's too lefty-liberal.
I think some people (on both sides) want an echo chamber (as was mentioned before) and not actually a true discussion site.

The poster- Ilovemybricks was site banned recently and following his posts, I can only see his ban came about because of his views on immigration that were not fitting current #refugeeswelcome bollox, which is being shoved down everyone's throats.

Not far off from the truth. The user base has gotten older, and the younger folk these days prefer Facebook, Twitter and all the rest of it. All this talk of over zealous modding I never quite understood, as it seems to me that all sides of the political spectrum get their 2 cents in. Whatever After Hours used to be (and there is most likely rose tinted glasses in action there) doesn't matter anymore, as this is how online discussion has evolved. Like it or lump it. Even if a concerted effort was made to bring AH back to the days or yore, how exactly would that work? You can't force things like that to happen, they either happen naturally, or they don't happen at all.

Given the topic, and while I wouldn't usually talk about the whys and wherefores, bear in mind that some reregs get caught later than others and are booted when it's worked out who they were previously. Most posters who are just persistantly being an ass tend to get quite a lot of time to prove they are capable of not being an ass before they get shooed off to Reddit or wherever the whiny kids go these days.

There is a lot less plotting than I think is sometimes suspected :P
