    Hi,

What criteria do doctor's need to become sports team doctors? I know there's full time masters through NUIG & TCD (I think - maybe there's part time masters). I know a lot of county team doctors are GPs, do they need this masters to have these roles or is it a special interest in sports medicine or contacts that got them the roles? Are there any diploma programmes available for them? I'm quite interested in becoming a team doctor in a few years time, primarily a club team doctor but I'd love to be the county team doctor if the possibility arose. Thanks.

    There are number of options
The faculty of SEM at the RCSI has 2 levels of member ship
Basic membership which indicates experience and some qualifications in sports med.
Fellowship of the same body is awarded afternproof of more advanced qualifications and experience working with athletes.
There are also masters courses in Trinity and i believe Galway and Cork Universities.
The ICGP and RCSI jointly run a diploma in musculoskeletal injuries ans rehabilitation
The RCSI Edinburgh runs a exam for a diploma in sports med too.
These are good ways to go.
That said starting off with your local team by approaching them isba good start.
Be warned there is not good money (if any) in most positions in Ireland and love of the sport as well as knowledge of it in detail is very helpful.

Thanks, yeah it's just love of the sport that I'd be doing it for. I dont see myself as much of a coach so this would be 1 way to help in a few years time!! Thanks.
