I know: somebody here knew the owner! And I know the Claddaghis in Galway. It's a small masterpiece of storytelling, film making and brand promotion. And when I say I love Dublin I don't leave out the rest but it just hits me every time I see it.

Any of the DOE Road Safety Advertisements - anytime I hear the music from the adverts I get a feeling of dread in my stomach.
    Least they work.

I also remember this advert, again the song just makes me think of this.
Would have only been young when it was on too, so I suppose it went in some how.

This ad may not be as well known as some of the others here but I love the tagline at the end, telling it like it is :D

Loved the Renault ads from the 90's. The music is a version of 'Johnny and Mary' by Robert Palmer that was used for most of their adverts at the time.

Here's Nicole and Papa. 'Nicole' couldn't actually drive in real life. A beautifully shot sequence....

    Kit Kat sheepdog ad

Well if we're going to do Kit Kat ads, we'd may as well do the Garda one. And the religious one :)

Garnier shower gel advert with naked girl. It was on a break from a movie on channel 4 (1990's) and I thought Channel 4 had really moved on but I think it was a mistake and it was the French version not for UK.

Used to say 'Au Revoir' before taking penalties until I was about 16 as a result of this.:D

There was a great billboard advertising campaign in the early 1990s.

Different cryptic Nostradamus prophecies were posted every week.... with no context.

The public had no idea what the campaign was for. Some people thought it was the apocalypse and started to worry.

In the end, it was for something lame. I can't even remember.

At the time, everyone was talking about it

One of the cleverest ads I've ever seen - TG4's combined Cold Case/Ros na Rún promo.

In case anyone doesn't know the story behind this, Cold Case was an American police drama that was shown on TG4 and Ros na Rún is TG4's soap opera. Those are the two lead actors from Cold Case and Daniel is a villainous character from Ros na Rún.

I remember when this came out people were asking how TG4 had the effects budget to fake it so well, especially getting two American actors dubbed so well into Irish.

The answer of course is that they didn't. John Finn (the lead actor in Cold Case) has Irish roots and would often come to Donegal on holidays. Someone came up with the idea of getting him involved in making a promo, he was up for it and they flew to the US to make it. They taught the two lead actors their Irish lines phonetically.

John Finn has since been in an Irish language drama, speaking Irish. The shock value of having two well known characters spouting Gaeilge still gets me every time :)

Ha! Never noticed the Johnny and Mary theme before. Great catch.

Gosh, I remember that! There were some people in my class at school who took it VERY seriously and were freaked out at the thought of the world coming to an end - because it must be true when the billboard said so. If I remember right, the ad was simply for promoting the power of advertising on billboards in a "look how billboards can get people talking, come put your ad up here too" type of way.

Not necessary the best ads, but definitely very memorable:

    Loved this:

And this much more recent one, which basically says: "don't use our product, stay in the UK and enjoy the Olympics instead":

One last pick. People forget that this was actually made as an advert for BBC Music:

Anyone remember the ad on British tv decades ago that finished with the cringe line "Anyone for tennis?"? I think it was to reassure people that if they gave blood it would not drain their energy...

Also the two wans chatting at a desk and one of them loads the Philadelphia cheese on a cracker saying to the other wan in a Cockney accent "Well, it is my birthday".

And "3 Hands" washing-up liquid which entertained every kid.

D'unbelievables dressed up as transvestites in the Eircom advert for handsfree phones in about 2002 with one eejit upstairs in the house looking out the back window ringing the other wan below him out in the garden hanging out the washing to Queen's "I Want to Break Free" was great. Brilliant fun.
