First Writer To Kill Off Sherlock Holmes?

There's a quiz on the Irish Times website with 22 very difficult literary questions. One I am stumped on is...
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not the first writer to kill off Sherlock Holmes. Who was?

I've googled every possible combination of those words and to no avail. The only thing that keeps coming up is the story where Doyle killed Holmes off but then bowed to public pressure and brought him back in another book.

    Any ideas?

I looked but I can't find anything about Holmes dying in the plays.

I think should be James Barrie in The Adventure of the Two Collaborators (1893)

I looked this up and it seems the most likely answer.

    Thanks so much.
