Security number on credit cards

A friend of mine used here credit debit card at an atm machine in Spain. The machine had a camera scanning the top and bottom of card, getting her security 3 digit number as well as the card number. Which is it? A credit or debit card?
Could always hold the card in a way that covers the numbers, this would be better if the generic parts of the card number were at the end of the number.

The machine had a skimmer, she got skimmed. None of this is news.
