Junior Parkrun Question, Do all the children taking part run the 2 k non stop, I ask because my 6.5 year old grandson says he wants to run , but I'm not sure he'd be up to running 2k non stop.

My little one (5yo) does it and absolutely loves it. She stops every 500m or so for a walk and finishes it in about 16 mins. Your grandson will be fine.

Thanks we're going Sunday , he's so excited about it.

There is plenty of walking and high fiving from the little ones at our local junior parkrun. I just have to keep a tight hold of the reins of the toddler so that they don't go chasing off down the path after the other kids when I'm marshalling.

Anyone else here done the Kilkenny parkrun? Beautiful setting, lovely route well organised. Both times I've done it done I've measured 4.8k. Yeah, I know about garmin variances with tree cover etc. Just wondering what others experiences are with it.
    Cheers

I've done it a couple of times and got 4.8 too. It could possibly be just down to tree cover as there is a fair bit, but can't say I'm an expert on the subject.

Lees road is the same. I measured it with a wheel 5K but it comes up as 4.8K on Garmins . Its in the middle of a park with tree coverage but some people don't get that garmins are not 100% accurate.

Have Parkruns had any affect on the numbers participating in events, obviously particularly 5 and 10km road races, where an entry fee is charged?

Don't know about the numbers running paid for 5km or 10km, but I do think that people pay more attention to pre race briefings and have also had people clapping the marshals etc at the start of paid for races. That definitely didn't happen before parkrun.

Yep and I'll be back. Would recommend it.

I've started running and joined a running club solely because of parkrun and its inclusive ethos. I'm sure that I'm not alone.

Wouldn't think so. I've run a total of 16 Parkruns - three of them this year. I've run 5 paid 5ks this year and two paid 10ks. Only a sample size of one, but I think the Parkruns offer something different to the paid club races. I use Parkruns as a measurement of fitness, or as a workout/session, but chase PBs and 'race' in paid races.

Anyone know for sure how the parkruns are measured? I've a TomTom and they measure both Tralee and Killarney as 4.8K.

    Not a complaint, just curious.

I definitely have documents somewhere with the details. I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers

We ran it today In Albert College and he loved it, We made it around with not too much walking he finished in 15:03. He was tired at the end but I think he'll want to go back again.

Great event Congraulation and thanks to all involved in organising it.

My impression is that the paid races have benefitted. Whenever I go to paid races I'll meet people I know from our local parkrun. Many of those would never have dreamt of entering an 'athletics' event were it not for parkrun. Indeed many may not have run at all. It's a gateway drug, long may it continue.

They should be measured with a wheel. I would never rely on technology to be accurate. Tree cover can cause a course to measure short due to the signal coming and going

I ran Dungloe on Saturday past. Lovely 3 lap route on rolling, although mostly flat, trail. Male and female records were both broken by visitors from Scotland

I just noticed from the Dungloe results that one of this country's biggest parkrun tourists was also there on Saturday - that was his 38th in Ireland (although the Republic only). Only one runner has done more events in Ireland - 47/53 in the south and 22/22 in the north)

Yeah I wouldn't be depending on your garmin/strava/whatever to give an accurate measure of a course. Myself and the hubbie both did the same parkrun at the weekend. Mine measures 4.8km while his run measured 5.1km.

Last time I ran Killarney it measured 3.06 miles (4.93 km) on my watch. Even so I would be surprised if it were inaccurately measured to be honest. The tree cover in KNP has caused havoc on my GPS accuracy on many occasions.

At Ormeau and Stormont parkruns (due to tree cover), and most 5 and 10k road races, I pay more attention to my time at the K markers, than my watch. The watch gives me a fair idea.

The Dungloe course was actually 250 metres too long until a couple of weeks ago so that probably helped. they moved the start forward.

it's a shame it's not that well supported by the locals, it's a nice little course. Falcarragh gets much larger numbers for a similiar sized town.

When I do Johnstown it measures around 4.8k on my Garmin. But when I look at the upload, it shows me crossing the end of the lake, rather than running around it. I'm willing to sacrifice 200m for such a boast! :P

New Parkrun starting this Saturday- Oranmore in Galway. Based in Renville park. http://http://www.parkrun.ie/oranmore/news/

Ha, learn something new every day...

I just noticed that the Marlay Course actually follows the path at the top of the concert field...I had always just followed other runners who followed the line of the grass verge . It was only that I noticed one runner religiously sticking to the path that made me think.

So turns out I've been cutting a corner (along with everyone else)!

I still measured it long on Saturday, but only slightly. Better to start long and move it back, however, the speed of some of the runners on Saturday, records would have tumbled even on the longer course.

I'd like to do Falcarragh next time I'm up that direction.
