How to properly ask the barber to have a haircut with the trimmer and not scissor and make it about 1cm long? Don't quite understand the numbering system they use...

Usually, each number is about 1/8 of an inch, so I think you'd be looking for a 3 or a 4 blade, but tell the barber, he/she will know.

OP - Just tell the barber what you want in plain English. They will understand.

Print out your post and bring it along to show the barber

Alternatively, say the same words with your voice

Learn to speak 'barber'. The better the communication between you and your barber the better the cut will be.
Ask him/her for advice and they will be only too happy to show off their knowledge.
Learn a few terms such as arch, nape, block and finish then use them to get what you want.
Make the occasional visit to a really REALLY good barbers and indulge. This will give your hair shape for a cheaper and properly lesser skilled barber to work from.

Simplest solution is to look for photographs of people who have a similar hair to yours in the cut you like and show that to the barber.
