I think a bit of the issue with the Zonal marking tweet was that - while in a sense correct - it was tweeted at exactly the final whistle. Sure, that might be the man's opinion, but I think there was an undeniable element of stirring the pot to it. Last I saw he was still acting totally shocked that there'd been any kind of reaction to it online. Sure....

The use of such an emotive term as "inadequate" was the real issue I think. Michael Cox knew exactly what was going to happen when he pressed send on that tweet and he got the reaction he wanted. He didn't see the English result coming though - karma's a bitch

Second Captains return to RTÉ Radio 1 weekends

Second Captains will return to RTÉ Radio 1 from July 10 with a new series called Second Captains Sunday.

This new Sunday morning show will feature comedians, actors and journalists from outside the world of sport.

Combining music, chat and revealing profile interviews, the station says Second Captains Sunday will bring a lively, light-hearted and humorous tone synonymous with Second Captains to a weekend audience far beyond traditional sports fans.

Presented by Eoin McDevitt, Ciaran Murphy and Ken Early, the show will pick apart the week’s main events from popular culture, current affairs and topical stories with the help of a guest from the world of comedy, acting, journalism, music or politics.

Second Captains Sunday’s will also feature This Sporting Life, where the special guest explains how sport has impacted on them – for good and bad. They’ll discuss playing and watching sport and their passion or otherwise for sport in their current lives. At the end of the series, Second Captains will crown one of their guests with the prestigious title of Ireland’s Greatest Non-Sportsperson Sportsperson.

So it's not a sports show?

    *shifts nervously in seat*

It's hard to know really, isn't it?

Is this the beginning of a brave new dawn, or is the slow steady neutalisation of any individuality or edge just around the corner?

I'd give it a chance of course, but 10am on a sunday morning on Radio One could make for too cosy of surrounds.

It's an odd time. I'd say most of their existing audience will be either sleeping off Saturday night or on their way to Sunday League games.

I'd say RTE don't want to stray too far from what Miriam does now, they'd probably be aiming to keep the listeners they have and add a few more that would be SC fans.

Eoin's one on one interviews with sports people are usually pretty good so it could still be a good listen depending on who the guests are.

I want to take today's show and force every person who's ever said that the current OTB team are just as good as SC with a gigantic smug look on my face, for I hath knoweth the truth all along.

    "Joe Hart! JOOOEEE HART!"

I think the funniest part of the show was Murph reading Danny Bakers tweets and Ken cracking up laughing.

'Worms? Worms? That's a bit harsh.'

Nah, for me, it's Ken's almost maniacal laughter when they play the SSN clip at the very end. The joy he got from that really made me happy. :pac:

Side note: Remember we were discussing things from the show we say in real life? Well, whenever I say "For me..." I immediately do the impression that I believe Murph used to do of people saying "Fuh me!".

Yeah, that bit was great. But it's almost hard to listen to, it's so cringy. I'm no fan of Steve McClaren but this makes me feel sad for him.

As for SC phrases in real life, I like to drop a 'Howayiz lads' when I come into work.

    JOEE HART!!!

Spot on from Ken. Very poor keeper...

Absolutely loved Ken revelling in England's misery!! Only listened to half the pod today as I was at the end of my journey but will be listening to the second half in about 5 minutes time.

This show doesn't even compare to the current OTB lineup, they're not the worst on OTB but they just don't have Ken!

I'm not above saying "Basketball styyyyle" anytime anyone mentioms either basketball or indeed handball of any sort.

The first 15 minutes of the post England v Iceland podcast is just gold. Was laughing my arse off as I had it on in the background.

Was on holidays last week so just catching up on all the daily podcasts.....

At this point, I'd like to add that Gabiele Marcotti has all the charisma of a sickbag

Yesterday's show when up pretty late, i didn't think they'd done one cos I checked in the evening and there was nothing there. Nice one.

Meanwhile, so many shows recently, did they get U.S. Murph on about the NBA finals since it happened?

No, US Murph hasn't been on since before the Euros.

The new jingles they made for both Ireland and England against Iceland are the best yet.

Yeah the England Iceland one is genius because they managed to take all the proper soundbites to sum the events of the night succinctly in 90 seconds, love Ken's maniacal laughter at the end.

I don't really like Irish one mainly because hearing about the "mad" Irish fans got tedious fast, although I loved hearing the different commentaries for the goals.

The South American commentator's "GOALLLLLLLLLLL!! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" doesn't do it for me.

Never thought McClaren could top his Dunglish ... but blown out of the water by it with Ken's manic cackle at a first off hearing, just perfect.

I thought the Eoin Reddan interview was really interesting. I'd have happily listened to another hour of it. Hopefully they'll get him on as a rugby contributor occasionally from now on.
