Simon Kuper was really not in the best of form today.

I fell a bit behind and only heard the train story today, for me it surpasses him meeting Haddaway and him getting locked out of his apartment in Austria in 2008.

Just being his normal self really. He was on the Sean Moncrieff Show once and got seriously irked because Moncrieff started the interview with "good afternoon" when it wasn't the afternoon wherever Kuper was. He may have written a good book once, but tends to take himself just a bit too seriously.

Usually, I like his style. Sure, he's very serious but I think that's okay. He's a guest that always has something interesting to say, I think anyway.

I'd spent the day digesting the speculative ramifications of the Brexit debacle, which was all very depressing, without necessary being all that illuminating. Then to hear him get so downright angry about it all on Second Captains felt like, uggghh: is nowhere safe from the tidal wave of gloom? Can I not just be left in my little football cocoon? Leave me alone Simon! Why bring so much reality into my little world?

Of course, it was only facts. But after the dreamland of the last couple of days it felt like being brought back to earth fairly hard

Missed the Haddaway sorry, presume this was during the OTB days?

Too harsh tbh, for the Second Captains interview he stated that he'd been up for a long period of time digesting the Brexit result so I wouldn't judge him too severely.

For the record I think Kuper is one of the finest journalists around. Believe it or not he was the main reason why I took out a subscription to the Financial Times. His columns every Saturday are consistently thought provoking. There aren't many other print journalists who I could say the same about.

I wasn't being entirely serious, I just think he could lighten up in interviews at times.

He met Haddaway during Euro 2008, as far as I recall Ken said he was carrying 60 thousand euro in a suitcase.

Id say they thought they would have a full time radio show long long before now, must be 3 years since they left NT. I like them would RTE not put them in instead of those lads on game on who are insufferable

The reason the lads gave for leaving NT was not wanting to work evenings anymore because they have family commitments.

Glad to see them getting more airtime though. :)

Wouldn't imagine so tbh. They were previously doing a show on Sunday evenings I believe, and the podcast kept going. And they kept doing the podcast even when the TV show was going.

I'd say RTE are training them up to either play a part in their weekend sports coverage on Radio 1, or maybe we'll see them get a weekend slot on 2FM, similar to Ballbusters a number of years ago (a show I deeply miss, despite its flaws).

Is it a sports show or general current affairs show do we know?

Strange they used a photo of Mark for the article, is he going to be on-air?

There is a podcast feed for "Sunday with Miriam"....

Worth subscribing to in your podcatcher incase the boys shows are put there when they air.

I'd like them to maybe do a show focusing on deeper issues in sport and interviews as opposed to a show doing sports coverage.

Maybe stuff like how Brexit will affect sport, doping, corruption, etc. The journo going over to the ref and showing him the video of a bad decision would be a good example from a recent podcast. Couple that with an interview each week and I reckon there's the makings of a decent series of shows.

Then keep the analysis of games and stuff for the weekdays.

This would be a perfect podcast/show for me... Do we know when it's due to start?

Ballbusters was good - Fiona Looney presenting it though was terrible.

Loved Ken's rant in response to that Zonal Marking article, I felt the same as him when France scored the first goal, this weird sense of relief.

Can't wait to hear what he says about England tomorrow.

Yeah. I'm glad that they brought that zonal marking fellow an his tweet up. A message written by an android indeed. Devoid of all context and human feeling. I think Ireland achieved something in the tournament and if Michael Cox can only look at it in that reductive and one-eyed way, then that's a bit sad really and you'd wonder why he bothers.

I actually laughed out loud at the Android remark :pac:

In fairness his whole thing is tactics and a somewhat unbiased view of things. It's just unfortunate that it was right on full-time and everyone was emotional. Pointing out of the obvious wasn't particularly necessary. He was equally unimpressed with Ireland in the Guardian Football Daily/Weekly preview of the tournament. There's a time and a place and it was like a red-rag to a bull. Reading the back and forth in replies to it made for interesting reading though!

It'd be great if they could get him on the podcast in the next day or two and set Ken on him.

Thing is though, there's been very little in the way of genuine analysis of the Irish team in the Euros. It's all hidden behind the usual "Ah shur didn't they do us proud? Aren't our fans great!? Let's throw a big party to welcome our heroes back!"

Don't get me wrong, I celebrated as much as anyone when we beat Italy, I was going nuts during the French game, and the performances in those particular games were streets ahead of most of our games in recent times.

But there seems to be little or no discussion on the Sweden game, or the Belgium game (in fact, by the way most people are talking, these games didn't exist), or the way we completely lost the head when Griesmann scored and fell apart. Or the way Ireland only ever seem to be able to pull out a decent performance when it's a knock-out situation (Italy and France in the tournament, Germany in qualifying, France '09, etc, etc)

I know we were all pretty shattered after the game, but I expected more from the lads than to deify the players and just get completely caught up in the hype.

The lads have not kept their journalist hats on at all analysing ireland for the euros ...very few flaws in the irish team of which there are so so many haven't as much been glossed over as not even brought up. Might expect that from Murph but Mcdevitt and Ken should have been asking a few questions about certain aspects of our performances.

I don't think that's totally fair, they devoted plenty of show time to both the Sweden and Belgium games. The show after the Belgium defeat was particularly miserable. It's the nature of covering a tournament that you just have to move onto discussing the next game pretty quickly.

They did discuss Ireland's defensive failings during the second half yesterday.

Maybe cold rational objectivity took a bit of a beating in the immediate aftermath of the Italy game, but I think you've nearly got to expect that in a sense: you don't send Ken over to France for dry analysis, you're going to get emotional peaks and troughs, flights of fancy and a highly eloquent collection of extremely subjective recollections.

I think a bit of the issue with the Zonal marking tweet was that - while in a sense correct - it was tweeted at exactly the final whistle. Sure, that might be the man's opinion, but I think there was an undeniable element of stirring the pot to it. Last I saw he was still acting totally shocked that there'd been any kind of reaction to it online. Sure....
