I am trying to find out once and for all is the formula of "220 minus your age" useful or not for working out heart rate zones. To this end i am asking you to simply put your age, min HR and max HR as an answer to this post.
I will kick off with mine, which will make it obvious which side of the argument i side on.

Age: 48, Min HR: 41, Max HR 204

220 - your age is a made up thing, with no empirical basis.

Not tested how low I can get it for a few years but was down around 44 last tiem I did. Max recorded is 187 (this year)(had some blips at 200+, but also recently recorded 192 for maybe 30s or more - not sure if that was a blip)

That must make me 33 or possibly 28:pac::pac:

I'm 40. Don't actually know what my low bpm is, but my high is comically low at about 158. So based on the 220 - age I'm 62 years of age. :)

What was the rate before the big adrenilin spike :D

As a word of caution. Going for a max effort should be done in a controlled environment and is best done under supervision!

    Here are mine:
    Age 48
    Min 49
    Max 187 (not all out)

Obviously 220 minus age does not work for me.

I have had dealings with my Local Coronary Care unit over the last 18 months. I questioned them on the 220 - age prior to treadmill stress tests and the answer has been that it gives a figure that a healthy heart should be able to reach all else being normal.
During these tests I have hit 204 but as they said running would have a different overall effect on the body .

Max heart rate recorded was 195 bpm (during an 8km run).

I consistently get into the +180 bpm region when cycling so I reckon the 195 bpm value is not a blip.

The max might be important, but max - min gives an indication of range.

My Max heart rate is not high enough!

    Age 40, for cycling...
    RHR = 54
    Max HR = 177
Never done an effort like mentioned earlier on the bike though! Came within 3 of that max during a spin class yesterday, so maybe a little low, but that's what I've got chasing pb's up climbs on the road.

    Max HR running is 192.

Max HR running is typically a few bpm higher than when cycling (not that I've ever tried that running lark)

Normally more than a few from what I've read up on it. Less muscles and less impact. Max HR goes down again for swimming (only just got a swim HRM, so am using yet another guestimate formula for that in the meantime). Edit - just checked last nights coached session and actually hit above the swim formula already!

Everyone here must be a pro athlete with those resting heart rates!
    How are you calculating them?

I have my finger on the pulse ....

Seriously though, the old counting method works when it's a small number - A bit more difficult keeping track when out of breath during an extended effort so the HRM is used to get the max figure for me
