After all the hullabaloo about who he'd represent in Rio, Rory McIlroy has decided to pull out of the olympics because of the risk of the Zika virus. Just how big a pussy is he?

Oh yes, he's a pussy for not wanting to become a carrier of a dangerous disease.

A rich one who doesn't need the olympics

    But he's not an amateur?

As any golfer what they'd rather have - a Major or a gold medal at the Olympics and you'll get your answer.

Plus, he already has a gold medal - the one he got for winning the Open ;)

We don't know what's going on in his personal life, being a carrier of such a dangerous disease to unborn babies might not be something he wants to risk.
    His choice :)

As soon as I heard his announcement, I predicted to myself that there would be a thread here abusing him about it.

    His life, his choice.

The title of this thread is highly misleading. Forshame, OP. Forshame. :(

The fact that the Olympics are still going on as planned, despite their being an outbreak of a very dangerous disease, and numerous other issues that are plaguing the host nation, shows that there is something wrong at the very core of the Olympics. I mean, the Prison Nation of Qatar was picked, FFS!

I wonder if Lowry bails will he be subject to a similar thread?

    It can be sexually transmitted.

Bubba Watson says he hopes he is picked as he and his wife had to adopt children so he said he has nothing to worry about.

There are other golfers who dropped out, most are worried about possible consequences of pregnancy if they contract zika.

The vast majority of Olympic events are open to professionals, In fact it's mostly professionals who compete at the Olympics.

It's the olympics just put off having a kid ffs, well worth waiting in order to compete in the olympics.

The Olympics would not be the pinnacle of a golfer's career unlike the track and field athletes, the swimmers etc. I feel sorry for them as they probably feel like they have to go as their careers had been leading to this point.

Rory would see it as "it'd be nice to have but screw that if I'm getting a disease". Which is fair!

Can't see what they doing there anyway, unless it's for the PR.

An Olympic medal for track and field and swimming etc is a money spinner,it earns them more appearance money and are more marketable.

Doe's anyone really give two short Fu*ks about the Olympics anymore like , lets be honest as the big sporting events go its a bit of a waste of time at this stage at least half the athlets will be doped out of it and winners will loose medels etc as doping is reveled over months after the thing also alot of the events are dull as sh*t ... Gimme the Euros , World Cup (Rugby or Footbal) , Intl Rugby test series , The Ashes , 20/20 world Cup , Any of the Golf Majors , The GAA Championship or the Darts in the ally Pally over the Olympics anyday of the week.

Also those Zika babys are freeky looking so cant blame the lad a all for bailing.

Getting them and the World Cup mixed up there.

It's his choice, big whoop. And tbh, I had no idea golf was an Olympic sport until the hullabaloo started about who he'd line out for.

Seems a reasonable decision to me.

He never really seemed that enthused by the prospect of playing for Ireland to begin with.

Which I wouldn't be too annoyed about, his choice and his decision. I guess he's found a handy excuse.

Ha, you're right. They're all the same to me, actually.

It's the human drama I find appealing.Someone playing some obscure sport like their lives depend in it is very compelling.

So you don't like the thought of drugs...but you'd watch rugby, soccer and football?

Spanish football...you can almost see the track marks of the needles they start sticking into the kids as soon as they come off the flights from Bolivia. Go into any gym and look at a budding rugby player and ponder about the efficacy of testing for steroids. You can actually see some GAA county sides bulk up during the Championship.

Come on, if athletes are taking it, you can bet it gets worse in sports with more money like soccer.

What's wrong with not wanting to potentially expose yourself to dangerous diseases?

I've never understood all the negativity surrounding McEllroy - is it just because he chose not to play for Ireland or because he broke up with his girlfriend before his wedding or is very wealthy?

Don't get me wrong like i'd watch some of it like , the boxing is always grand and some of the weird ones like the hammer and that can be good for a laugh . Just wouldn't get to hung up on like.

For some people, surprisingly, family is more important that a game. Surprisingly.

    Is there that much negativity?

I haven't seen it tbh. I see the opposite, people kinda clinging to his Irishness and pretending he really wanted to play for us when to me he just didn't seem that bothered...and good luck to him, why should he be?

How long though? No one knows how long exactly to abstain - and we don't know if there is any problems in fertility that would mean a delay could be detrimental.
Fair play for putting his family first.
Zika virus can stay in semen longer than in blood, but we don’t know exactly how long Zika stays in semen.

And also says they don't even know if its transmissible - its all guess work, and this is something you would rather be safe than sorry in.

A couple of good tommy tanks to clear his pipes when he gets home and he'll be grand.
