Should all religion be banned?

Do you think it's good for the mental health country that we have thousands of people attending religious ceremonies every week, talking to someone that doesn't exist and basing their morals on ancient scripture written centuries before them?

I know religion is a comfort for some people but it's seems bizarre that we allow it to be still significantly involved in modern society. I don't think the comfort it brings to people outweighs the negative cost and drastic burden it has on society.

Religion divides people more than it brings people together and, as such, I think it should be banned. What say ye?

Do you think religion should be banned? 95 votes

How exactly do you go about banning religion?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

No. But religious orders should keep to themselves and keep the hell out of our schools, hospitals and legislation.

    All except for Scientology, obviously.

Trying to ban all the Jews about 60 years ago went down a treat

Let people believe whatever the feic they want IMO. Religion is like a penis, once you're not shoving yours down my throat you can do what you want with it.

Ban it in public, keep any religious symbolism and prayer to the privacy of your own home.

Yeah, because letting people believe whatever they think has worked out well so far.

I think we should ban hot dogs.
I don't understand how anyone likes them! I mean, they just look like that dogs mickey bit that pops out when they are horny.
    So smooth and pink.
    Gross.
And me & my buddy always argue about this, she loves them. I don't understand. Surely anyone can see/taste how gross they are?

I'm Not religious and don't go to a church at all.

But, no. Banning it would be forcing your opinions into people, which is your criticism of religion.
People should be free to be religious or not themselves.

Without religion people would find something else to war about.

No, it provides great comfort for millions and millions of people. It is not the fault of the religion when someone is killed because their god told them to.

Impossible to ban something that people choose to believe in but it should be strictly extra curricular ie. FAR away from all forms of formal education and no children should be allowed be indoctrinated into it. If once they are 18 they make the choice to believe in and join a religion then go for it, but baptising a child and forcing them into relgiious education is indoctrination plain and simple and not much different to brainwashing.

Only if you don't agree with the concept of human rights.

I may not subscribe to any, but it's not on me to prevent someone else seeking whatever one gets or receives from it.

I don't think as organizations they should have any particular privileges or esteemed position in soceity. They're ideally just a group of people with common interests, beliefs and ethics. They're not beyond reproach.

We may as well ban Marmite then as well while we're at it.

It should not be banned as people should be free to believe in what they want but it should certainly be taxed and all other preferential treatment removed.

Off to the A&A thread with you OP. You might get the responses you want to help you fap off.

Personally I do believe in God but I'm beginning to think religion is one of the biggest reasons people don't believe. This scientist seams to believe.

We could bring in new laws to prevent people believing in things we don't like.

How about we call them Penal laws.

Yeah, I'm sure that would work out well....

It would be impossible to ban it. But they should be taxed at 55%+ and kept out of schools and hospitals.

If history has taught us anything, it's that persecuting people for the religious beliefs is a sure fire way to a more peaceful society.

They'll all die away on their own eventually, if we don't all go up in smoke first.

No but shoving your beliefs down other people's throats or mocking someone's beliefs should be illegal.

The only way to truly remove religion from the world is to let it phase itself out naturally via education and information.

Trying to actively stamp it out is no better than atrocities committed in the name of religion throughout history. You'd just be replacing one horror with another.

I would not be banning it. People can worship me if they wish.

No it shouldn't, as mockery is subjective - so a fun joke to you might be mockery of someone else. Where do we draw the line?
