Defending this ref is idiotic. That one where long was sandwiched by 3 and the free was against him was scandalous.

Long committed the first foul, hence the free against him. He was clattered after that but that was irrelevant really.

Ah well Ireland were even starting to play good up until the second goal.

Their two goals came from us attacking and not getting back in shape properly. At least we attacked though and opened up right? Contrary to the geniuses in here, i preferred when we were "dishonest" and still 0-0

Very poor from McCarthy for the second goal. The tactics or the players mindset have cost us today though, I don't know which exactly was it. The long ball tactic has been so blatant that it's almost beyond tactical, just utterly lazy way of playing.

Time to throw on Robbie methinks.

O'Neill happy enough to lose 1 or 2-0. As long as we don't get hammered and he can then hail a "brave effort".

Get a goal back and it will be a nervy finish for them.

Need to make sure the goal difference doesn't get a hammering now if we are to have chance of coming third.

Won't matter. Beat Italy and 4 pts world be enough to go through regardless of GD.

The ref has been poor and I feel he has cost us today. It should have been a penalty or at least stop the play for a head injury. he does neither and Belgium score. I feel for the boys out there.

He's poor but Ireland have cost themselves. No ambition, no quality in their play.

Need a goal just for the goal difference at this stage & then a few novenas.
Goal difference would only really matter if we finished on 3 points. If we beat Italy we finish on 4. That would be enough regardless of goal difference.

No we're not far enough behind yet.

The ref is bad yes but we are awful. They would have comfortably beat us no matter what.

Not buying it. We win that penalty and go 1 up, we get at least a point from this game.

So Italy will have to actually try to guarantee top spot?

The best team is winning here. They've been better from minute 1.

They win on head to head with belgium so they are guaranteed top spot even with belgium on three points?

I don't get Ireland fans sometimes. First half wasn't pretty to watch, we sat back yet there was only one or two half chances for Belgium. And people complain.
We come out with more attacking intent in the second half, leave gaps at the back as a result, concede 2 and people complain.

I was actually quite pleased with how the first half went.

Which is why the FAI needs to use the money they are getting from this competition and begin to invest in our youth teams and league. Far too many leeches at the FAI.

Italy are guaranteed first due to their head to head v Belgium
