We went for a weekend before. Booked flights with Ryanair (the airport is a bit of a distance from the centre of Paris though - but you can get a bus outside). Book accom on-line. Save ytourself some cash. We booked accom in the financial district... was fairly cheap. Heres some links for you...

(this is where we stayed... not bad... small but inexpensive).

Paris is a great city with lots to do, so it might be a good idea to plan what you really want to see so you don't miss anything. There is a certain day of the week where museums have free entrance so its worth checking that out. Last time I was there I took one of the river cruises and it was brilliant, gives a different perspective of the city. La Defense is definitely worth a look as well, its not always mentioned in tourist guides, but it is really impressive - there's a big shopping centre and an IMAX theatre there as well. Easy access on one of the newer metro lines.

Flew ScareAir aka Ryanair to Beauvais recently, and have to say the service was straight forward and pretty cool if you wanna save a few quid by not flying Aer Lingus.
Louvre is free last Sunday of every Month, yes beer is ridicously expensive, seven Euros a pop. The Bastille area is trendy and cool in terms of nightlife. Locals noway as ignorant as portrayed - that's the yanks job!

I was in Paris a few weeks ago

check out the batofar if it's your thing, it's a nightclub on a boat, good house/techno, it's open all night and I had a ball in there!! :D

Pour toutes informations sur la location de La Cantine du Batofar, téléphonez ou faxez au 01 43 55 32 38

the Ibis is a pretty cheap hotel - there is one near Bercy which is surrounded by restaurants and pubs

he Bastille area is trendy and cool in terms of nightlife.

ya it's a bit like their version of Temple Bar
for cheaper drinking I went to the Frog before the Batofar
they do large jugs of beer for around 15 euro, you'll get 4 pints out of it

    http://www.frogpubs.com/Html/cadrage_frog-bercy.htm

    also located in Bercy :D

    hi,
I stayed in Paris last year and it was amazing. We stayed in the Ibis too and it was perfect. We had a lovely meal in it with all you could eat starter a main course and a desert carafe of wine and half a bottle of real champagne for around €55. So you can get bargains. You have to see the eiffel tour the moulin rouge and sacre couer (dont walk up the steps as we did there is a lift:D )
You will have a great time.
    gonk

    Hi All,

I've just booked a long weekend in Paris 1st weekend in Sept! Never been myself!

Is it mad expensive for everything... like would you need a fortune to see the sites, go on trips etc??

I looked up trips on some site (cant remember which one) and it said for a 1.5 hour trip on one of those all round glass boats was 10euro.... sounds really cheap!??

I booked a hotel (and used tripadvisor.com) to see what it was like, look like some places are horrid!!! :-( so it seems..

I know the beer is mad expensive, but is the wine too??? Any info ye have would be great!

    Beruthiel

Only the cool Parisians have heard of the Batofar....good going :)

If you're into electro-pop and wanna do it in the hold of a boat then give it a go!

In general sightseeing isn't that expensive. The thing to remember is that it takes many weekends to see all of Paris so don't try to do everything at once. The Lourve (as aready mentioned) is free the first Sunday of each month and is closed on Tuesdays. It's 7€ to get in before 3pm and 5€ afterwards (open 'til 8 I think). Don't try to see everything as even the most amazing art gets boring when you've seen 1,000 pictures in one hour :)

Eiffle Tower is 11€ to take you to the top floor (of 8 if you're willing to walk to the 1st floor) and is well worth the visit.

Boat rides on the Seine are 10€ and last 50 minutes. Get them from the Eiffle Tower or beside my place at the bottom of Pont Neuf.

Beer is expensive but only if you insist in drinking in an Irish bar. Guinness/larger will set you back 6€ a pint and wine is just as expensive as in Eire. Fags can't be bought in many bars but you get them in 'tabacs' (open until 6ish) and are 3€ for a pack of 20. DON'T ask for '20' or you'll get 20 packs! Just ask for a packet of smokes instead.

But there are bars with cheeper beer, esp on weekdays. Check out the web page I work on (out-of-date I know but the heat is killing me!) www.parispubs.com Pints can be found for 2.5€ a pint but the craic prob won't be always that good.

As I already said, wine is expensive in bars but ALL beer/wine is dirt cheap in supermakets.

Let me know if you need more info/prices/maps....

    That's a great site :-)

And it looks as if it's cheap enough to see the sites as well.... sounds excellent.

One other Quick Q! The metro seems to be good enough??? As i got a map of it. Are cabs cheap (Going home from pub/club etc..) also what time does the metro run til. Im thinking of getting a rambler type of ticket if I can, so you just pay the once and jump on/off the metro as needed.

    Cheers for the info...
    :D

A single ticket is valid for one journey and can be used on the Metro, RER, Bus and Tram within Paris and its immediate suburbs. Single tickets are sold either individually or in packs of 10, called a 'carnet'. A carnet is a booklet of 10 single tickets.

So you buy one ticket. It costs 1€ and it'll take you anywhere on either system but you can't hop on-hop off on the buses.

Best bet is to get a daily pass for about 5€

The metro is very good. From 8am until 8pm there's normally one every 90 seconds. If you look on the map there are 4 bigger lines called RER lines which are much faster and stop at fewer places but you use the same price.

    Go to...

    http://www.ratp.fr/ParisVisite/Eng/Voy_q/f_travel.htm

For info on the 'rambler' type tickets. You just have to decide if you want Basic or Versailles or EuroDisney type tickets. The Paris Visite ticket is basically for tourists and gives extra offers in shops and stuff. It's 18€ for the 3 days (just Paris) but it's cheaper to get one everyday if you don't want those reductions.

    http://www.ratp.fr/ParisVisite/Eng/Voy_q/f_travel.htm

    for more info.

First starts at abut 5:30am and runs until about 1am though the last time depends on the exact time. When you get used to the map you'll never take a taxi again :)

Taxi's aren't very expensive, though you pay 5€ from the start if you call one on the telephone rather than flagging it down. They can't refuse to take you somewhere and won't take 4 people at once unless it's a people-carrier type vehicle.
