Just wondering what everyone's top three uses for broadband would be? My own killer app would be internet radio...now all the Dublin pirates are gone...

Mine would be of illegal use, and I'm sure a lot of people here would be the same :p
But on the legit side, proberly the joy of pages loading quick, quicktime sites too, and of course the bit of gaming.
nice playing bf1942 on uk servers with a 11ms ping

Oh, and to create new, as yet undefined, services, to keep myself in the style I have become accustomed, or to buy a pub, in the south of france, or spain.

Ah Lenny, beat me to the implementation of a dynamic sig.

And I was also inclined to print ip addresses, I assume you're logging them, I'll get onto the Admins.

    Gaming and probably downloading.

Gaming is alright if you're playing games on UK servers, and the two us are on the same server. But if one of us wants to game and the other browse the web, forget about it.

Also if we want to play on different servers, or god forbid play different games, no way.

    Oh and always-on. Mmmmm.

    lol fisty

koneko, how about setting limits on both computers of how much bandwidth they have?
As saying playing cs you would use about 7-10 k down, 3-4 up?
While if the brother browses, he is going to use full bandwidh every time he clicks..

I download alot of tv episodes. I presume that its illegal. For example I have all the Fawlty Towers episodes and hundereds of friends episodes. Comes in handy when you are working nights and there is feck all on tv except Euronews :)

Aswell as that, online tv and radio and downloading movies of games.

I also like on www.xtravision.ie you can watch trailers before you rent or ehhem download.

I myself feel that my adsl connection has improved my business revenues significantly.

I used to have to wait ages to send files across the world and now i can run my server from home instead of paying for hosting.

All I have to do now is set my mind to becomming the best pornographer on the web.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 3,935 Mod ✭✭✭✭Turner

You run a server on something that has a max upload of 256k. Would hate to be downloading dolphin porn from your server :)

As has been said, i use it for everything that i did before, only faster and always on.

Before i got broadband i turned my pc off regularly. These days its usually up for at least a week at a time. Things like norton and digiguide update automatically in the background so that my programs are always up to date.

I leavean ftp server for personal use (i send movie files from work to home and vice versa).

I play games whenever i want to and for as long as i like and i can stay connected to irc.

    Its the dogs furry bits

Yeh, i download a load of illegal stuff do, but sure dont we all :)

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 3,935 Mod ✭✭✭✭Turner

chief, what online tv do you look at on the internet? I know there was a topic on this a while ago, but the links are'nt working for me and the only tv I can get is china Tv

oh yeah, I use broadband for gaming, surfing without clock watching, I leave a ftp server on in my house and can access my Hd from sites in dublin when I'm working, email server and a bit of kazaa mp3's :D
its also great coming home early (before 6) and being able to go online

Would it still be illegal if you were to buy two copies of lord of the rings the fellowship of the ring, put one copy back on the shelf and then just download the second film from the internet. You paid for it kinda

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 3,935 Mod ✭✭✭✭Turner

Ando, there was a link in the broadband tv thread I think. I unsticky'd it, might restick it for a while. We really do need to get a comprehensive list of working online tv channels.

    ditto:D
I also subscribed to a real one superpass(stg£20 for 3 months I think) which gives access to a lot of TV, including BBC news, cnn,ABC,etc, etc.
Hundreds of music videos and trailers.

The top gear channell ,with all latest reviews as seen on the programme and archives.
And of course non stop live Big Brother ( )

But it's simply brilliant for, the commercial free radio,3200 channels apparently, from loads of genre's in cd like sound which is what I'd use, it most for, while I'm working on the p.c..., just bliss :)
and of course fast always on web access....
and err other stuff reffered to by err.. others...
    mm

On broadband I'll be constantly downloading Linux ISOs. Over and over and over again. My broadband should be unmetered for this very purpose.

I play Ultima while listening to high quality streaming music and downloading stuff off Kazaa all at the same time. It's freaking gorgeous.
Also Xbox Live and loads online gaming although I haven't downloaded quite as much as I thought I would.

    Believe it or not ;)

I'm now in the US, on a super-speedy, unmetered campus ethernet connection. This means I'm:

    - listening to BBC via internet radio pretty much all day;

    - updating my machine's OS automatically, without requiring me sit there and wait for it to complete;

    - downloading albums of MP3s from my account on eMusic, about twice a week;

    - watching the Daily Show on Comedy Central's website if I miss it the night before.

Here's the key point: you can't compare dialup use of the net to broadband.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

How fast is the campus speed then? I presume we're talking T1 speeds?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 3,935 Mod ✭✭✭✭Turner

I was bored so did a bit of detective work.

    IP Address: 128.195.***.**
    Location: Irvine (33.658N, 117.817W)
    Network: UCIICS-NET

    Registrant:
    University of California, Irvine
    Network and Academic Computing Services
    Irvine, CA 92697-5475
    UNITED STATES

At the present time, we have a 60 mbs connection from the Residential Network to the UCI network. (This is equivalent to forty T-1’s.)

So to answer your question sloth, he has the equivalent of forty t-1's. Great for p2p like kazaa..

    eg.

    Lenny, just PM'd you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 jmason

    ha, 40 T1's, I wish ;)

In fact, the residential traffic (and I'd say most of the campus) is throttled. the effective speed is about 70KB/s (that's bytes), so about equivalent to a 640Kbps DSL/cable line. Sounds like the U of Tennessee needs to do the same ;)

Most techies around here would typically be using a similar-speed cable connection for about $30 per month (with static IPs, and ability to run servers, depending on ISP).

oh yeah: forgot to mention the online gaming ;) playing the odd bit of RTCW: Enemy Territory (only a 280Mb download ;).

Also, over here it looks like MS are going to finally do the "online gaming for the masses" thing with the XBox; ISPs are starting to announce their cable packages as "suitable for use with XBox".
