Each of the Original Star Wars Trilogy opening sequences were cool.
The Matrix opening with Trinity blew me away when I first saw it. It still looks great too.
Minority Report had a great stylish and expositional opening. It explained the concept very well and was still very fast paced.

The opening sequence of La Haine with the world and the petrol bomb igniting.

Once Were Warriors again poster related,as the idylic myth of tourist brochures pulls back to revel a scene of post industrial decay and polution.

    Rear Window
    North by Northwest
    Casablanca
    LOTR
    The Third Man
    Saving Private Ryan

I could go on to name countless more but it's only early in the morning yet :)

    Fight Club.

It was one of those where you're sitting in the cinema, and even during the intro you can tell it's going to be one hell of a film.

    And it was! Hurrah!

I like the opening scenes of X2 (go Nightcrawler!) and Ghost Ship (despite the rest of that film being awful) aswell as the ones already mentioned.

not so much an opening sequence but the opening titles of seven are quite impressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,149 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

    the beginning of Platoon
the new guys coming off the plane to be met with the sight of body-bags about to be loaded onto the plane that they're coming off - the whole "if you f*ck up this is how you go home" thing being rammed home.

    Hamburger Hill
the opening shot is the memorial wall before jumping into the a*se-end of combat with the platoon in question trying to evacuate. It's only afterwards in the film that you learn why they were so eager to get out of there, being the rather notorious Ashau valley.

    Titus
It was oh-so-different and you're sitting back scratching your head trying to figure out exactly what is going on.

The opening for Exaclibur was great too.
It's got that whole "dark ages" feel to it and you just get a sense of something grandious about to start unfolding before you.

    Training Day.

Not exactly the opening scene but it is in the first few minutes. Its the scene in the cafe when denzel washington meets his new recruit. the dialog is brilliant.

Blade Runner. The opening shots of the city are simultaneously hellish and beautiful.

ah it has to be the opening scene of saving private ryan, has to be witnessed on DVD also for the full sound effects.

The Matrix was teh win. Especially considering you didn't really know what was goin on, it was just like 'Holy Schnidt!'

Prolly why I was a little disappointed with the start of Reloaded. :)

Star Trek: First Contact has a great start too. Full of action :D

    the matrix definetly:)
there is only two words to describe it:
    and:ninja:

    LOTR
    Gladiator
MP and the holy Grail was good(especially the credits)

    X-Men 2 was excellent...

And what about that all time classic, the opening sequence of Jaws? Fancy a swim anyone? It's dark and I have be-er...

    Gladiator
    The Matrix
    X-Men 2

The opening to along Came A Spider was pretty good.

The Big Lebowski - "Sometimes, there's a man..." :D Classic
Both of the Lord Of The Rings films so far.
    Leon.
    X-Men 2.
Saving Private Ryan and Enemy At The Gates both had fantastic opening scenes.

Although, I really dont like the fact that a lot of films these days are just trying to out-opening sequence each other. Gets a little boring.

Edit: Oh yeah, almost forgot. The opening to 'Day Of The Dead' was awesome. And in the same respect, 28 Days Later when Jim was walking around a deserted London.

The Matrix for me , because when I went I didn't know anything about the movie and I was really taken aback,
I quite like Star Wars for similar reasons, esp when Darth Vader appears,
Also like opening of Heat (LA Takedown) it sets up the movie well and introduces the characters quickly in a contextual fashion,

also 28 days later when he is wandering around London I think its really well done,
and Blade , the scene in the disco with the Blood sprinklers
    excellent

The start to Austin Powers 3 was very clever and perhaps the highlight of the movie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭shotamoose

    eh, Touch of Evil tbh.

Oh and Austin Powers 3 of course!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

The matrix, Blade runner but my 2 favs would have to be...

    "Apocalypse now"...
the doors song with the napalm in the forest !

    and

    "The Lost Boys"
again with the doors " people are strange" playing as the camera flys over the amusement park from the vampires point of view :) classic !

[edit] : just after flicking through my dvds to check for more and realised i forgot about the opening to "29 days later" ! brilliant ! [/edit]

The three stories at the start of Magnolia are absolutely captivating.

Saving Private Ryan, don't really like the rest of it but the beach landing is amazing.

The car crash in Mullholland Drive.

    Goodfellas. Ray Liotta's voice over.

Plus that scene in Teenage Sluts IV: The Butt****athon.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back has to be one of the funniest openers. :p
