Broadband + failed line test HELP

Yesterday I spent all day ringing Esat and Eircom to get information on why my line test failed. They didnt seem very informative and the representative in the broadband dept. insinuated that I had to know an engineer personally to solve my problem..... After several calls I managed to find out that it either had to do with the distance from the exchange, the line quality or adsl just being temperamental (bad mood????). I could try getting a new line installed and waster € 130 as there is no guarantee that it will work afterwards. I also found out which exchange (quaker road, Cork) I have and it is enabled - I actually live right next to it. So surely it must be the line??? Now I read here on this page that too many connected devices - fax, modem, phone etc. can affect the line test. Has anyone had similar experiences - and has anyone found a solution to the problem. I hate the dial-up connection and I am dying to get the adsl which I finally can afford.

the more devices you have connected, type of cable you use and a few other things will affect your line.it could also be from your house to the exchange where the problem is, is it an old line? did and engeneer come out to you?

there are 3 thing that you brought up here..

firstly the different service call waiting call answering tata (DAXservices) these all have to go they interfere with your Bandwidth,

secondly the phone line (faxes, modems, ...) there is a device in the wall socket which the splits the bandwidth on the line
a lowpass filter -3db at 44k and hipass at 52k you can see why the modems and newer fax( non9k) won't work

finally there is two types of Dsl open to the home user
adsl who's bandwidth is defined to standard 512k download and 128 download,
    and
rdsl who's bandwidth can vary and is slower but can give a longer distance to the exchanged

go with the RDSL self install from eircom .... it will be fun putting it to gether:D

In fairness the lines here on this street look pretty dodgy - rotten poles with messy wires. But they look like that everywhere so I guess that isn't the problem. I guess they really should be buried in the ground like elsewhere in europe. I don't think eircom even provide engineers to come and check out why its failing - its sounded like it is more up to chance whether it works or not. I will try and plug out my fax/phone to see if that helps. They also said it could be due to weather conditions etc. I got ten different explanations from different providers so it is hard to find out whats true.

Bear in mind that the line will not be tested "live". They'll just look up the database again if you call up.

Supposedly the database is updated based on retesting lines every so often, but no one seems to know when the tests occur, or even if this is still being done at all anymore.

I am unfortunately in the same sorry boat as you.

It makes you wonder - the current ad (eircom) is completely false advertising then - as they actually give the impression of adsl being available to anyone without mentioning any limitations such as line quality etc.. It really pisses me off - have been waiting for this for ages and then I cannot get it. I really need it as I work as a freelance translator and dial-up makes me lose out on a lot of jurgent jobs. And the lack of service - the people working there dont seem to know anything.

if your neighbour passes then get them to upgrade to adsl, you plug a cable into the filter and over to your house and pc and they plug their phone in as before. No bother, it has been done .

Otherwise sell up and move somewhere that has ALREADY passed the test...condition of purchase like.

If your work relies on having a decent connection to the net then you are being a muppet if you rely on Eircom to do the right thing by you, they wont fix your line .....unless you know an Eircom engineer and can approach him informally to fix the line up which is what the Eircom bods told you themselves ..in fairness to them.

Thats the way it is, you have no rights (save to 2400 data), Shinzon in the IoffL forum told us how he was prepared to pay for an engineer callout at €50 or so and could not get Eircom to do it for him.....

yep mucks right, i was on an online chat I told the guy that id pay for the engineer to come out no problems, his response was they dont send engineers out, i said that id pay again, nope wouldnt budge, so unless you know an engineer in eircom to fix it up for you your buggered

And by the way those distance from the exchange line quality etc etc, is just plain bull****, eircom have no idea why line fails and cant tell you, neither can anyone at esat or netsource, they just dont know.

I have to say though that esat were willing to at least try to set me up on business broadband, but i had to sign the contracts first before there engineer would come out to see what the prob was. couldnt take that chance so declined.

    Regards
    Shin
