Strandhill?! Are you sure you're not mixing that up with Rosses Point?
Years since I played both of them - greens like concrete and fast.

I've only ever played on 2 golf courses, there and Howth. Strandhill is more scenic so I enjoyed the walk slightly more. My golf game sucks so I don't appreciate things greens and pace.

I love the setting and the whole 'Aura' about Mount Juliet.
It's a classy place. I wouldn't necessarily like to play there too often - that way the place remais special (and I can afford to feed my children that way too).

    And where was Slade Valley?

Waterville Golf Links, Kerry. Nice views and scenery and the course is well designed. The standard of the course maintanance has gone down a bit recently but it still deserves a mention.

Have a look, I know it's my local club but any visitors that I've spoken to say it's one of the best in Ireland. Some rank it better than mount Juliet.

It truly is magnificent, I can gurantee if you go for a round you will want to return.

Ps. I don't work for the club just really like the course, pitty I can't say the same about the hotel food!!!

I simply pointed out that some people had said it was better than mount juliet. I've never played it Mount Juliet so I couldn't possibly say it is or isn't.

I really just wanted to bring the course to people's attention, I'd love to here the comments of anyone that has played mount wolseley.

I signed up as a member of Mount Wolseley before it opened.... the course has an interesting design, though I think he went a bit ott on the use of tiered greens.
Then though, someone went crazy planting a LOT of rubbish trees and plants that looked way out of place on a golf course - really they were garden trees and mixed loads of different varieties so it lost any natural feel, as well as making the place look messy.
A parkland couse like that should have only a few varieties of native trees like oak, beech etc... not the mess thats over there.

Also, in keeping with the mess on the course, they kept up the "Substance-over-Style" theme with regard to the housing around the course...

I didn't renew my subs. after a couple of years because I hadn't time for golf and now I am a member in Gowran Park (Kilkenny) which is just down the road from me...

Some day you are in the area, just take a drive through Mount Juliet (if you haven't been there before) and you will see for your self.

It's not just about throwing money at the course.

I agree 100% with you in that is has done nothing for the course, but haven managed a pub in the town I can say it has done a lot to bring people into the area who wouldn't have ever thought of coming to Tullow in fact I'd say before the Mount opened Tullow was virtually unknown (maybe still is :)

True but if you've played the other local courses like Killerig or Killkea or even Carlow I think you'd agree Mount Wolseley is superior to all 3. I have played the 3 myself and would rate the mount as far better.

A mate is a member of Gowran and reckons it a nice course hope to play it soon.

I think St Helen's bay in rosslare is the only course I've played that comes near Mount Wolsley.

I do. I'm a barman there! Come visit me. We have a decent pint of Guinness and the bar staff are a good laugh. We usually drop something every hour or 2

    Hi Lads

What do ye think of an online community for golf courses/ golfers for a particular region such as:

    1) Basically Golf courses are given a user name and password each so as they can VERY SIMPLY add in thier news (eg captains prize results, competition tee-off times, special offers etc etc etc)

    2) Golfers can come here and see the clubs news and in addition post messages to the community asking questions, making suggestions etc etc

    3) There will be a list and details for all golf clubs in the region for any foreginers.

    4) The administrators can send out email newsletters to all members of the site announcing the clubs/community news.

    5) Other stuff like polls on any issue (eg what the best course, who will win the Ryder cup etc etc) are available.

That is the principle funcionality but many other things are possible.

Do you think it would work (ye being golfers and everything!)
    Cheers

Sounds like a great idea though it'd take a large amount of work to contact all the clubs and have them select a rep who will update their information. If it worked it'd be very cool though, and I'm sure you'd even be able to get sponsorhip if the idea took off.

On the original topic, I haven't played any of the better courses listed here, like Druids or Mount Juilet, but recently I played a very bad round on the best course I've ever played on - the Monty course in Carton House. It's a testament to a couse if you can come off it having played really poorly but still comment on how good the course is. I can't wait to play it again. Some of the rough was like really long hair, it was so thick!!

    Si.

I'm a big fan of Ballina in Mayo.

Lovely little track. Driveable par 4s. Short and neat. Love the place.

    Good Guinness afterwards.

Currenty, I like Headfort, Heritage and European ......... If pushed, I'd go with The Heritage as my favourite, it is a clever course that you have to think your way around.

Visited Portrush for the first time this summer. Loved the course and the whole area.

Living on the Limerick / Clare border I'll have to vote local and say Lahinch.
On the wish list to play next year are Carne, European, Portrush and RCD.

Was very wet underfoot when I played it.

    Then again it was raining

Carne is the best golf course in Ireland, if not in europe. It's silly putting up 10 golf courses and asking people to nominate. A bit like that idiot Tubridy's idea of the best Irishman ever, picked from his list. Thank god we're blessed with great golf courses, both parkland and links.

I haven't played many of the top courses in the country, I tend to play a lot of the middle tier courses, of thoses I've been lucky enough to play, Tullamore stands out as the course I got most enjoyment in playing.
