can i do this without changing my land-line connection.
how much would it cost to get cable at home in Ireland for example?

Who's your cable provider? As far as I know ntl (new owners of cablelink) are planning to roll out cable net access soon(ish). Don't ask me for an exact date, though, - ask them.

Your other choice would be ISDN (eircom hi-speed). Ask eircom about that, although I'd wait and go for the cable access. Why? 'cos its bloody fast, bud...

Well h nickabolokov you didnt give any examples of pings for say quake 3.
In the likes of cities e.g. Dublin a typical ping ping on 56k is around 140-180 thx to fibre op back bones,380-480. So theres no hope!
Eircom hi-speeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed has an installation cost of £99 inc vat and just buy a terminal adapter approx £90 and rental for yer isdn will cost £35 per month but you can keep youre normal phones.
