How are water filled bottles suposed to prevent dogs crapping in your garden ?

All my neighbours have softdrink bottles in their front gardens. Nobody I've asked has come up with a credible theory as to why this is supposed to work.
The best I've heard is, that to a dogs vision, the large bottle looks like a massive dump and the dog thinks "I'm not hanging around to see what laid that"

    Anyone know for sure ?

maybe it makes them take a píss against a fire hydrant, then they forget about your house.

The idea is that the light is reflected from the water thus scaring the animal, btw its susposed to be used to stop cats not dogs

Whenever my cat sees a light spot, she start playing with it?

half a water bottle filled with water stops cats as they see their reflection in it and get frighteded off by it............

not sure if that stops dogs pooping........i know what does tho.........bear traps............

[I think] The idea behind it is that when the bottle is slightly opened it will let off a hissing nose.
