I think your on the wrong board mate; try the "no-body on this board gives a crap" board.

I think what he meant to say is "Why do WWE never come to the Republic of Ireland?"
Well, it's because americans are so ignorant that they think Belfast IS in ROI. Most of them don't even know that Rhode Island is a state.

as far as jap wrestling goes, the feds talked about are not hardcore and japan makes a v. clear distinction between pure & garbage/hcore - while njpw has a shoot style in a lot of matches, its more of a k1/uwf/ifc/pride influence - big japan still does the garbage thing but have no tv so its unlikely to see them outside of a tame match on njpw tokyo dome supercard as a curtain tugger - only zero one, njpw and noah (an all japan breakaway) have regular tv in japan so they are the only real candidates

zero-one - while a small group uses a lot of us indies and would have an immediate recognition with the more casual fan and in that respect could do well - though noah has jap greats and is the one i most want to see - njpw style may not transfere too well to the uk market with most peole brought up on the wwe style of brawling

It was said before on this board, the wwe doesn't come to the republic because we don't have an indoor venue big enough to put them on, there's no point in doing a show in the roi when they can make more money in belfast.
And another thing, IT'S NOT AS IF BELFAST IS THAT FAR AWAY, don't be so lazy, if they put on a show in cork it'd take longer to get there from dublin than it would to get to belfast.

To be honest, I don't give a crap if they come here or not. Lazy? I went to the Belfast show last October, I've been to Insurrextion in Earls Court, WMX7 and the Royal Rumble in Boston this year. So I don't think I'll feel deprived if I miss out on a crappy house show.

The Odyssey isn't much bigger than the Point anyway. I think they don't come here because they don't know the difference between NI and ROI. Micheal Cole even said it a few months ago on Smackdown when plugging the shows: "Belfast in the Republic of Ireland".
You don't know for a fact that it's because of the size of the venue, so stop talking like you know.

the "lazy" thing wasn't specifically aimed at you, more at people who won't go see something in ireland if it's not in dublin, but in reference to your "The Odyssey isn't much bigger than the Point anyway" point, i'll just paste up what i said in response to a similar comment from you a few months ago in reference to the size of the point compared with the odyssey arena:

    "Odyssey Arena:
    Centre stage seated: 10,000
    taken from : http://www.odysseyarena.com/technicalinformation.asp

So my figures were slightly off on that.

But the point theare only holds 7500 people at a concert because that's what it's primarily designed for, the seating plan is completely different for a centre stage seated show which is what the wwe do, and it cuts that capacity in half.

The wwe is currently in a position where it needs to maximize profits and there's no way it would bother doing a show in the Point when it can do a sell out show in a purpose built 10-15,000 capacity arena in the UK.

The last time they came to dublin was before the odyssey arena was built and there's very little chance of them doing a dublin show for the simple reason that they can make a lot more money across the water or up in Belfast"

The wwe will always(well usually, i reckon they will do a show here when business gets better) go to belfast over dublin or anywhere else in ireland because they can potentially make twice as much more in belfast than they can anywhere else in ireland.

I'll tell you why the WWE doesn't come to the republic - no, it's not because they don't know the difference between Northern and Southern Ireland - ffs its a billion dollar corporation

anyways...see if they stay in the uk, they avoid paying the extra taxes etc that are involved in crossing the border and coming down here to host a show. It's merely more convenient for them to stay within the UK and the way they see it we can make the short trip up north anyway if we want to see the show...

Back in 1995 and b4 they would have come down here because although it would have been less convenient, the wrestlers weren't paid that much and could have done with the pay check for the show. You forget that although they only had maybe 5000 fans in attendance at the 1995 show, there was a shít load of merchanidise sold, and 1/2 of the items were out of stock by the end.

Extra tax for crossing the border? Are you serious? Border tax? There's no tax for crossing the border you idiot.

"it's not because they don't know the difference between Northern and Southern Ireland - ffs its a billion dollar corporation"

Then why did Michael Cole say on Smackdown, that the tour would consist of a date in "Belfast, Republic of Ireland"???

border tax....lmao. Some people are so gullible.

They ARE taxed by the irish government if they host a show here. You can't just come in and host a massive show without asking anyone first. Then they have to convert to euros for the trip down. etc etc there's loads of these expenses that they dont need.

Some people may be "gullible", but you, my friend, are just stupid

i thought it was because we don't have any decent venues down south

You really are an idiot. I think you missed my point.

THERE IS NO TAX FOR CROSSING THE BORDER- and you said there was.
Of course they have to pay tax on the profits from the show, but they have to do that in Belfast anyway- so there is no EXTRA tax involved with putting on a show in ROI as you suggested. Dumbass. So don't be so smart.

    You goon.

back to the topic at hand - anyone got any more news on the combat channel?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 590 ✭✭✭herbie747

Yeah, it's not called the Combat Channel, it's The Wrestling Channel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭cmb.

anything a little more substantial? - eg subscription fee

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 94 ✭✭Slane

Its good that they changed the name, that "Combat Channel" name was the gayest of the gay gays....erm....gay! "The Wrestling Channel" sounds better but still seems to be missing that certain "umph" it needs.Surely there must be a few better names that it could have, like "Wrestle-zone"(although it would just be claimed they are ripping off that well known site) or "Ground Zero" or "Ground-Zero Wrestling" or possibly
"Pro-Wrestle Arena".I don't know, maybe they are gay too, probably are, you guys got any ideas?

How about......'WrestleMania Channel' or 'Powerslam' or 'Wrestling N'Stuff' or even 'The Channel of Wrestling'. lol.

Plz tell me that this is not going subscription, i like my wrestling dont get me wrong, but to pay for raw AND SAMCKDOWN on sky then have to pay to see the quality wretling like NWA-TNA and ROH is putting out really is taking the piss

    Regards

    Shin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭cmb.

it has been reported by a couple of sources that it will be by subscription but no mention of how much

as for quality - while tna has not got much of a budget it stand up very well againsed sd or raw (no one will ever have the same production quality of wwe) and for me its the one must see show of the week - this year tna has been better than just about every wwe ppv - only wm and 2 rumble matches delivred - the rest has been at best average and at wortst atrocious but i cant say ive seen a bad tna show since some of the early ones

i Have read some of that info saying that it is a subscription channel but that all seems to be mostly rumour, and i have heard from people whos opinion i would value that its gonna be free-to-air,but who knows, i guess we will just have to wait till we are closer to september.

It was NEVER called the Combat Channel. That was all speculation.

It WILL be free-to-air for all SKY Digital subscribers only.

I have a bit of an inside scoop.

its says in this months powerslam that the new wrestling channel is going to be subscription, might fire off an e-mail to sky to get final clrification on that

    Regards

    Shin

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 590 ✭✭✭herbie747

    Powerslam is wrong.
    E-mail and ask them.
They only printed that because there were so many rumours on the net about it, and they didn't have any official info to print- also, Doug Williams had mentioned it in his interview, so they had to add something in about it.

Most of the info they had was correct- but it is NOT subscription.
SKY won't tell you sh*t about it either. Guarantee you.

why all the secrecy? doesnt inspire confidence if they (whoever they are) wont give any info out

Thats because nothing is official yet.
There has been no press release. Everything has been rumours & speculation.
They aren't going to announce something that isn't 100% confirmed.

    3count?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭cmb.

yeah - meant do start a shop then a news letter - bombidol/coleman

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 590 ✭✭✭herbie747

Yeah but the shop never even got past the idea stage, and the newsletter never made it to the 2nd issue (and the 1st issue was 2 months late).
Don't think they could organise a channel- no offence lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭cmb.

thats what i was worried about - no offence meant

whats the chances of pwf being shown - the have local tv so the shows are made and despite the tiny crowds they almost always have some fantastic talent wrestling

but please - no f.o.w. - got their anniversary show dvd the other day - advise all to avoid at all costs
p.s. to cut a long story short i have spare copies of xpw freefall and fallout on dvd (unopened) - anyone interested?

The production quality of PWF is sh*t- unfortunately. It just couldn't be shown on national TV.
Maybe sometime in the future if it improves.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 94 ✭✭Slane

So herbie, with your inside news can you tell us when we can expect a press release or more confirmed information?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 590 ✭✭✭herbie747

I'd say within the next month.

    Dear ***

Thank you for your email about plans for a new wrestling channel. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

wrestling channel web site is up (sort of)

    http://www.maxtronmedia.com/channel.html

    http://www.thewrestlingchannel.tv

Massive news breaking, I have just been sent information on the new wrestling channel that will be airing on the SKY Satellite network.

The channel will be called the Wrestling Channel and not the Combat Channel as other sites posted.

The channel's head quarters will be in London and the studio's and production offices will be in Dublin and will be trading under the name of The Wrestling Channel Ltd.

The channel will have a fully functional website with a merchandise, chatroom and news section. The site is currently under development and can be found at www.thewrestlingchannel.tv

The channel will be FREE to sky subscribers and 10 hours of Wrestling will be shown 7 days a week.

The channel boasts a magnificent line up of promotions. Here is the line up they currently have: CZW, FWA, TNA, IWW, NOAH, XPW, XWF, NJPW, Mid-Atlantic (Classic), Memphis Classic), MLW, ROH, RF Video Shoots, Florida (Classic), CMLL, UPW, WEW (Nude womens wrestling), UWF (Classic), ITV World of Sport, Classic Wrestling Superstars (52 Episodes of top stars in other promotions.

The wrestling channel is the first of its kind anywhere in the world, and this is a great boost to Pro Wrestling in the UK.

Keep checking back to the Wrestle Zone UK site for further information as we get it. We are currently working on getting an interview with one of the channels executives.
