Just after coming across this on the Liverpool website.

Monaco will be relegated after financial irregularities with debts up to 57million. This will mean that Le Harve will say in the top flite and also that the three Liverpool players on loan there will probably stay put.

Anybody else got any info on this. Gotta be a massive blow for Monaco after finishign so well.

    It's here too.

It could be the end for Monaco look how long it took Marseille to get back to just a good mid-table team.

1st team from outside any top division to be in CL?

Havent seen what they did but from all concerned it seems to be just.

Thats gotta be tough on them. They just finished 2nd in the league! I wonder will they be allowed to compete in the CL next season??

Is this another job opportunity for Tony Cascarino:D

Would be good if Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama Pongolle stayed in France for another year, they will just dissapear in Liverpool youths I reckon.

It could be worse for Liverpool. Monaco will lose their CL spot and this will put Auxerre into a UEFA spot. Cisse, Mexes and Boumsong, all Liverpool targets won't have to leave then to get European footy.

Monaco have 6 days to appeal. If they can get a guarantor they will be OK.

They are somewhere in the region of €50 - 70 million in debt. Who would want to be guarantee that?? lol

There is a few things they can do, They can Sell thier ground, they can sell thier training grounds, they can sell any holdings the club owns, if they sold thier 3 best players they will make enough to keep creditors happy.
but it's rough, they won't make it.

Thats the start of a viscious square - sell best players - fans unhappy (loose revenue) - team not so good - fans unhappy (loose revenue) - team drops like a stone - fans unhappy (did I say this before? loose revenue?).

Thier ground holds more than the state population that may be a bad thing.

I forgot it was monaco we are talking about - can't they just ask a royal family for money or something?

In fairness big clubs tend to have a firm support no matter what happens.

Man City were still taking gates of over 20K in Div 2, Newcastle had 10K+ every match in div 2 (maybe even 3) and Sunderland and Wolves manage high gates in Div 1.

Abroad, Fiorentina (now Florentia) and Marsaille managed very high gates in the fouth (yes 4th!!) and second div of their respective leagues. Fiorentina lost all but one star player (Angelo Di Livio), while Marsaille had Tony Cascarino. If they can still pull crowds in those circumstances, then Monaco should do alright!

Im not sure Monaco have ever had a big fan base. I dont think its ticket sales they depend upon for revenue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭p.pete

They have one of the smallest grounds for a top flight team I would reckon. Plus their fan base is a lot like Wimbledons (stop me if i'm talking through my Arsene) - they really aren't that bothered about turning up for matches.

Where exactly do they get their revenue?

I bet the government (i.e royal family) will just bail them out. The only reason the club has ever survived is because of them.

    I think they're the Crown Prince's hobby.

(Well you've gotta have a hobby haven't you)

Good question. Maybe that is why they are €70 million in debt!

Yep, nice hobby. That and the casinos.

He probably gambled away the teams wages for the next 3 years or something like that.

Yep - the crown Prince is a director of the club I believe (though could be wrong as I'm too lazy to check)

Monaco have a decent history of success/near success. The name of the club and the location attract good names. The ground is tiny (15000) - never saw a game there but did a tour (you could actually just walk in for a look around back in '94)...

I find it weird that France Italy and Spain punish clubs for financial irregularities (Toulouse, Fiorentina, Athletico Madrid) but when it occurs in England nothing seems to happen?

When it happens in England they take control of the club and pay all their wages for them - or something inacurate like that. Which kind of belittles the clubs that struggle and make a huge effort not to go into the red.

The fools have not money left now, so ha ha.

Monaco average less than 4,000 supporters even when they're top of the league, whereas Marseille still sold close to 30,000 season tickets when they were in the 2nd division. They immediately won the second division when they went down, but were banned from promotion for two years.

Oh, and Fiorentina are back again, they just bought the rights to the name (acnd the colour purple, bizarrely enough) back.

Think Firoentina are called Viola now.

There is new laws in England that means a club cna only pay out a certian amount of its turnover in wages something like 60%.
And other laws which dont make it worthwhile to into administration which is what some clubs were doing to get cash.

Fiorentina are back to that name now, they bought back the rights for 1.7 million dollars recently - they'll most likely be back in Serie A in four seasons, tops.

That't now a law, it's something G14 are trying to get FIFA to impliment, it hasn't been passed as of yet because some of the clubs are trying to have the % changed, I think it was Real, inter and berca, but yeah the proposal is that a club can't spend anymore than 60% of the previous years income on player wages, and also the players can't have terms in the contracts that say if the club cuts thier wage they can leave for free/next to nothing.
The earliest it will be implimented is 04/05 season.

And there is my two cent.

Well that my friend is just WRONG!
They were in a lot of debt untill the compney that owened them (Real Banco) Sold buildings the club owned in the major finencial area of madrid for over 500million, then sold thier training grounds to a leasure club (like a big gym thyp compney) for over 100million.
The king of spain had nothing to do with it.... infact, the king of spain couldn't afford to play two weeks wages for the club, never mind clear 80million debt.
