Do not buy this terrible router/dsl combo unit!

I've just had my replacement unit delivered today as
the last one died one me, guess what, the replacement
has done the exact same thing

Plugged it in, got into the admin page fine,
rebooted pc and all i have now is the power led
on and the DSL light constant even though i've plugged out the dsl cable!!

Below is a confirmation of other people with the same problem ..

    Back to elara.ie I go... :(
    Heya,
My brand new D-Link 604+ ADSL wireless router has stopped responding after a
reboot. It seems to be working ok as an Ethernet hub at the moment but the
actual software on the router is not responding and nor is the wireless. I
can't web to it, or ping it, and the D-Link flash upgrade program can't even
find it by looking at the MAC addresses. The power light is on solid and so
is the ADSL light (even tho I've unplugged the ADSL cable).
    It's just a brick.
I've tried disconnecting the power and pressing the factory reset button but
it doesn't make any difference. The manual is pathetic and doesn't say what
the correct way of resetting it is. Does anyone know if there's a special
    trick to it?
There is some weird RJ14 console port on the back but I don't have a cable
for it and I have no idea where I can buy one. Does anyone know?
    Thanks,
    Rob.

I believe you need to hold the reset button in for twenty seconds or so,
    with the power already applied.

Thanks for the reply, Jon. I've tried that but still no joy.

I rang D-Link today and spoke to a techy. After I confirmed the model (DSL
604+) and stuff it went link this:
Techy: "Can you get to the web administration page?"
Me: "No and I can't ping it either."
Techy: "Have you pressed the reset button?"
Me: "I can press it if you like..."
Techy: "No wait - please don't press it!"
    Me: "Ok."
Techy: "The button can be a little sensitive on that model."
    Me: "Oh right."
    Techy: "Have you pressed it?"
Me: "Not right then but I did yesterday. Lots."
Techy: "Oh. I think it's dead."
And then he took the serial number and said someone would ring me about
    getting
    a replacement to me.
So the moral of the story is DON'T PRESS THE RESET BUTTON! If it's not
responding try manually power-cycling it and if it's still knackered then
    try a
console cable or ring D-Link - it's a free support number in the UK for
broadband equipment. Clansman kindly explained what a console cable was
    (also
called a rollover cable - all the pins are reversed).

Crikes, don't like the sound of that, they really should put out a product
recall, or at least put a warning on their website/download area, I might
even mail support to see what comment they have...
    Thanks for the warning!

Cool, let me know if you get an answer!

No probs. I hope they give me an advance replacement. I'd rather send it
    back
to Dabs as faulty than wait several weeks.

Quicker to put 12v across it from a car battery and take it back where
it came from saves a lot of hassle .

Funny you should say that. No I didn't but I am returning it to the
retailer as DOA =) D-Link advised me to actually.

A console cable is just a normal ethernet straight through cable where
ALL the wires have been reversed at one end. So at 1 end you'd have
L - R 12345678 and at the other you have
    L - R 87654321
It NOT a crossover cable, as ONLY 2 x pairs are swapped in a crossover
    cable.
A console cable is also called a "ROLLOVER" cable.

Mine seems to be working fine, runs a bit hot though!

    Word of advice,
Do not attempt to upgrade the firmware
or you'll have the same problem as me, not that i even
did that in the first place, but other people are reporting
    similar issues... :(

I can promise not to update the firmware again!

seriously, got the latest Firmware on there still causing me no trouble.

I got the d-link 604+ too. absolutely no problems with it. upgraded the firmware to wadslgR2-21-002-11-b3t18uk.xdsl and still working away :)

and those msgs you posted... theyre mostly about lockups and the router cutting off every so often, which hasnt happened to mine at all ..

dunno, maybe its the luck of the draw
