Motivation

Ok... I've gotta admit it. I'm the single most lazy piece of sh1t ever and I'm kinda getting fed up with it. I haven't studied at all for my Leaving, but that's not even the point. I don't do jack for anything... and I hate it. I mean I haven't even gotten up to get the drink I wanted 2 hours ago. :(

So does anyone have any advice on how to motivate yourself towards accomplishing the goals you want to accomplish.

This is serious btw. After my lc i've gotta try and get my life up and running and if i'm gonna end up sitting on me arse I'll just end up a bum, and I don't want that. All advice appreciated.

You obviously don't really want to do the things you say you want to do, or the goals you want to accomplish. Well, maybe you want to do them, but you don't want to actually do the work associated with completing the task, you just want to be in the place that you see in the future at the end of the accomplishment. It's like you want to win the lottery without having to walk to the shop to get the ticket and think of the numbers. I'm just throwing out ideas here btw.

What 'goals do you want to accomplish'?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭lordsippa

Yeah, that's another problem. I have absolutely no ambition. Never really had... Nothing I really wanted to do. I've loads of false goals but they're nothing that really captures my heart.

Ah, so you don't have any goals you want to accomplish? That's ok, maybe in time it will come to you, maybe tomorrow it will come to you. There are many people out there that don't know what to do, many people aren't stirred in their hearts by the jobs they do in life, many people don't actually care what they do in life. Many people have no possibilities to have a life and some don't want the possibilities to have a life.

The fact that you care for something that captures your heart is something to be proud of. This fact will prove your future simply because you want it. You will find what you want, we all find what we want - the only thing is time. Some people achieve their hearts desires in a nanosecond and some take years or lifetimes to achieve them.

Stop wrecking your head from want of change, and self loathing for not being able to decide, and just enjoy life. It'll come to you.

Yeah... really gotta think some stuff over, but tomorrow when I've slept a bit. Head's just kinda messed up cause I'm at the crossroads of my life (well not quite but I don't want to leave it too late to organise a job etc), what with the leaving and such. <sigh>

    Thanks Gordon btw.

    do you live at home?

the time that you realise that you take responsability for your own life is about the time that life gives you a kick up the arse and tells you to cop on, and that basically if you dont start doing something useful, you are not going to have a home to live in let alone somewhere for you to watch porn on your pc.

you could take a wee look in here if you wanna try and find out what it is you want to do, then set yourself some goals with a timescale.
mebbe your folks would be willing to pay for a session or two so you could get some ideas?
I was getting pissed off with myself not knowing what exactly it was I wanted to do myself, after 3 visits to this crowd and a lad named peter (peter@mypotential.ie) I've settled on teaching for now :)

    g'luck

I think lordsippa realises that he has to start doing something useful. Which is the reason for his post, I think.

It's all very well saying "get up off your arse" but what next? What does he do after that?

What motivates me is the fact that I have to do a job and do it right. That jobs pays for the things I love and to live an independent life.

Sometimes, Lordsippa, you must first imagine a goal. A reward. Don't think about the whole future, that'll only distract you. Think about what you're going to do next week, tommorow, the next half hour whatever. And set yourself a small task. Then when you've achieved that, try something harder, and so on.

The key here is to build up your confidence to make changes in your life. It can be scary leaving school and having to make some major decisions. But in hindsight those decisions can mean f all. When I left school I had no idea I'd end up being a computer nerd, but that's what happened.

And as someone who has had motivational problems I know what your going through. And while it's easy to say "cop on and get up off your arse" it's doesn't really cover what is a complex problem.

Also, there are a couple of things which I find help a great deal with fighting laziness.

Don't eat junk food. It puts loads of toxins in your body and you'll feel tired and lethargic. I eat MacDonalds usually only once a month and the next day I always feel more tired.

Excercise. Yeah, hard to get motivated for this too. Try and sneak it in while your brain isn't looking. Like walking to the shops or getting off a bustop too early.

Caffeine. Probably bad for you in the doses I drink it but it does increase your metabolic rate.

Get into proper sleep patterns. Go to bed at 11 or 12. If you're up till 4 am and sleep till 2 pm the next day, your body clock will get thrown out of whack and you'll feel disconnected from the real-world(tm).

    HTH!

Well... I walk into town from where I live quite a lot (it's an hour + walk btw); I can only sleep for bout 6 hours max before naturally waking up... And don't even talk to me about caffeine (I've had overdoses on it).. That's the thing. I'm not too lazy when it comes to walking somewhere etc. I'm just lazy when it comes to doing anything important, even if it's easy. Things like filling out a simple form for whatever I'll put off until it's too late. Stuff like that.

(I'm a lot more awake now so making more sense)

Hey, gonna let you in on a secret here.

Everyone is lazy at heart. What I mean here is that in general ppl would like to chose the path of least resistance.

Sure I would love to take the 'not making decisions' path. Im sure eveyone would. But the truth . Being lazy isnt an option for most ppl. Cos they want a better life. Everyone strives for the better things in life and in doing so are prepared to work for them,

For example, Ive had serious motivation problems this year. But thats been down to working really for something Im not sure I want.
But ive done it, sorted it and am moving on.

It realy is you choice here. Your not special. Everyone would ideally like an easy life. But they chose not to do so ,They chose to work so they can have a better one.

Heres a frightner for ya. You will be the most depressed regret ridden poor bastard ever if you dont change now.

Cos if you cant at least tackle these traits now then at teh age yuo probably at you will remain the same for the rest of you life

    I can relate.

I just seem to be drifting through life hoping everyone will give me a break and I'll be able to get a decent job out of it all.

You'll find however that terror is a great motivator.
The idea that you are about to fail your Leaving Cert will eventually sink in and you'll do something. Maybe not much, and maybe not in time but it will be the start of you regaining some element of control of your life.

Before you know it you'll be in second year in college just barely scraping a pass when you know you could easily get top of your class.

I think (in my case anyway) the fact that I can just slide by and do Feck all has been permanently engrained onto my pysche. Hopefully some gigantic failure will shake me out of it and I'll end up getting off my ass, but I doubt it.

    Want advice?

    Fail your Leaving Cert.

If you're not going to go to college this year, you'll have to work. That'll make you appreciate what college can bring you, especially if you work in a menial low-paying job. You might find your true career path. Just sit down and think about what you want from life. You're clearly very intelligent, as a CTYIer, and you can go far in life. Maybe you just need more time to think about it.
Good luck with the exams. My best mate is repeating and she's so stressed at the mo, I have loadsa sympathy for LCheads.
