Pop, fizzle, capacitor.

I've been having various problems with my computer recently, the worst of which being that most half-new D3D games crash in very random ways. Today i was swapping around sticks of RAM, and i noticed a big stain of dried stuff which appears to have dribble down the board from a capacitor.

This reminded me of two incidents which occurred about 3 months ago of an audible pop followed by a fizzle, seemingly coming from my computer. I turned the computer off on both occassions, but then got brave and turned it back on later, with no immediately noticible ill effects. Now taking this in mind, i've done a web search and found that capacitors may be prone to leaking.

I'm just wondering... how many people out there actually suffer from popped capacitors, and is it possible that this would cause windows (and even OGL games) to run fine, while crashing D3D games?
