    Hi everyone,

jarhedz, www.jarhedz.com is a small online gaming community.

We are looking for a distinctive, original and memorable logo for our website/branding.

In order to find the right logo, we are holding a competition for logo designs.

The competition is only running for a week, with very nice (imo) prizes to the winner and 2 runners-up.
(The short timeframe is necessary unfortunately, but I hope the 'pressure' will give some people an added push)

1st prize is an Archos JukeBox 20GB Multimedia system with Camera attachement. This is one sweet piece of kit. I'd love one, but unfortunately can't enter the competition myself as (a) I'm one of the judges and (b) my artistic skills are less than 0. :)

2 runner up prizes are L'epsion Mini Digital cameras... these things are 1/2 way decent digital cameras and are about the size of an old 50p piece. Very cool.

There's a wealth of talent on this board, I hope we can entice some of you to have a go.

More details on the competition (including rules etc) can be found ere:

    Regards

    joev

<modedit>As DeVore mentioned, pay particular attention to this:
    3. When you submit an entry, you relinquish all rights, including copyright to said image and it becomes the property of jarHedz
I don't think it's unusual for the winning entries to become copyright of whoever is running a competition, but every single entry?
    Just be aware of this.</modedit>

    Taken from www.jarhedz.com
    2. The image should be submitted as a 100x100pixel gif or jpeg but must be scalable from 32x32pixels to 256x265pixels - Authors are requested to retain the 'original' format (Photoshop, psp or whatever) for sending to jarHedz should they be the selected winner.

If u want flexible scaling ability u'll need files in a vector format (vertors dont use pixels, therefore can be scaled to any size without any loss in quility)
100*100 does seem a tad small for a submission size ?

Some really excellent prizes tho, I want that jukebox :)

Ok, it probably should read: The 'demonstration version' should be a 100x100 gif or jpeg :)

I don't think 100x100 is that small... It's more to keep the file-size down than anything... if that's not possible, then sure, we can up it.

The final product would be in vector, or whatever supplied to us once we notify you that you're the winner :)

Aye.. *I* want the jukebox... really cool... mind you, the cameras, altho not big prizes (cost wise) are really really nifty... I want one of those too... ah well.. there goes food-money for another month :)

If you want a good quality logo concept that reflects the company and its desired market position and outlook, appeals to its target market, sits above its competitors and works across all the mediums it is to be used, i would advise preparing a brief document for competitors.

Also a 100x100pixel image is no indication of a good logo. what might work in that format might be totally useless when actually put to work in a real world situation. You will need to see it implemented across stationary, web, print, fax to get a good idea if a logo works.

Keep in mind that while a good logo can do great things for a brands image a bad logo can do just as much damage.

Good idea. However, I have no idea what a logo design brief should include, could you guys offer some suggestions?

I agree completely. The 100x100px GIF thing is simply to get a bunch of images together to be able to judge which is the preferred. It will allow me to 'mock up' some web-layouts etc. It's not a hard limit... feel free to ignore it. :)

I agree completely. This is the reason that we're holding the competition in the first place. All of us (the people working on jarHedz) are amatuer GFX people at best (we have some talented people, but they not dedicated artists).

I'm very conscious of how a good logo is almost the most important thing in 'branding'. It's something we've been debating for almost a year :)

I'm also re-considering the deadline... perhaps a week is just too un-realistic. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the suggestions Figment. Please keep them coming.

    joev.

Stick another week on the deadline so i can have a lash after my exams (they end on the 30th).

What do you want to logo to be?
    What is a Jar Head?
A person with a jar for a head?

Your current 'button' is as good as any if you have no theme to portray.

jarhead is a colloquialism used in the US Army/Marine Corps.

Marines started calling the standary US Military 'crewcut' a jarhead.

US Army soldiers then began using it as a term (not entirely complimentary) to mean any Marine, or more specifically a dumb hick of a marine :)

jarHedz is (trying to become) an online gaming community that is non-profit with a focus on gamers rather than trying to sell you stuff. We may enter into 'revenue generation' if we get enough interest but the aim of this is to self-fund not to 'make loads of money' off gamers.

The current 'button' is a stylised asterix. We used it to convey this idea of 'anything to do with online gaming is our interest'. However because the asterix is not really distinctive nor original, we feel that it gives a mixed message. For that reason we'd like to get together something more distinctive and unique that will stick out in peoples minds.

For my own part, I think the finest logo I have ever seen is the O for Oblivion at Alton Towers. It's simple, eyecatching and immediately invokes the 'oblivion experience' every time I see it (needless to say, I bought a chunk of merchandise with that logo on it :) when I was there summer before last).

    There we go. Enough info?

    joe.
