Ok guys her good self picked up Planetside for me today as she heard me going on about it but i got a problem.
I registered, gave in credit card details etc then decided to hell with this monthly subscription bull, besides i definitely dont have the time.[anyways when herself heard about this subscription she said i spend enough on PC stuff as it is] :)
Well TBH shes right so now i have a dilema.
I cancelled subscription but can i sell this game on once i cancelled or would a possible buyer benefit from my credit card once they use the CD key?
She bought it in Game and they say no return with this game :(
Whats the story guys and does anybody want it ?
    :(

That's bull**** I thought game had a 10 day return no questions asked. I'm sure one of the lads on this board will be willing to buy it off you if there's no issues with your CC. I reckon your best bet is emailing the planetside tech support about this.

    Exactly what i said.
They are a bunch of **** ,ie GAME not their staff.
Anyways im gonna give it a months trial at least,
    Shhhh!!! dont tell herself :)
Ive gotta say its a load of bull buying a game and then having a huge download before you can even play, probably not huge on dsl but im on isdn and auto patcher says 5 and a half hours left :(

Sorry for hasty post ,maybe a mod can delete?

That copy of Planetside cant be used buy anyone else as you have registered it, hence they wont accept it as a return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭adnans

i looked everywhere in swords today for a copy of planetside and couldnt find it. :(

stick with it for a month and see if you like it. it cant be that bad :)

How big are the patches when you get the game and is there anyway to get this patch off someone who has already downloaded it?

And is there any way to play the game before you get the patches (like a training program) just to see how it runs?

Took me 3 hours to patch on 64k isdn.
And no you cant play without patching.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,643 ✭✭✭magpie

I have to agree, first it takes about an hour to install from discs, then a couple of hours for patches, then they hit you up for a sub... what a racket.

And then is it just me or is the game a load of s**t when you finally get playing?

I think someone should post a warning as a sticky so no more of us get stiffed.

I'm also surprised so many people are raving about it and not mentioning the considerable downsides... I'm talking to you FlavorFlav!

Stick with bf1942 and it's mods is my advice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

it is just you, the game takes at most 10 min to install, granted the patches take a while but your not just suddenly hit with a sub...

it actually dose tell you on the front and back cover of the game box, its not anyone elses fault that you didnt read what was n the cover.

    "30 day subscription included"

    "additional online fee's required"
    "valid credit card required"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,643 ✭✭✭magpie

Unless of course you bought it on play.com in which case you wouldn't see the cover would you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

no offence m8, but you bought a game online without at least checking through its website or at least even the FAQ(7th question) for the game...dosent sound like the bright thing to do.

Arguing on the internet is like taking part in the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still a retard.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭El Marco

So your the retard in the fact you bought a game you knew nothing about and now you moan.

Monty - what sort of rig do you have at the moment?

Although Im only on 64k ISDN, Im finding PS totaly unplayable atm. I freeze up non stop and its a joke in any med to large battle. Im running a P4 2.4 with 256MB and a GF TI 4600 tho am about to upgrade to 1 GB ram. Will this really make the game playable or is the ISDN fooking me up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

I play it on 2 different setups, both from work so I dont really know about connection problems...but I will say 256 mb ram is not really enough for the game, 512 is grand, it seems to have a extremely less of the lock ups you discribed...except maybe the odd one in huge scale battles(the usual sort you'll find on emerald)

Heh, a lot of people I know who left Neocron to play Planetside have since come back. Main complaint was why should I have to pay for an FPS.

Venom. Would freezing be due to packet loss? rather then ping? Is there an ingame option to check?

I think you have the same vid card as me (128MB?) Have you tried uncapping the fps? (if your using XP + DX, it automatically caps to the refresh rate of the monitor).

Planetside got a 7.3 mark from the Gamespot review. Any thoughts? Was thinking of purchasing it when i got me broadband back up and working....not so sure now.

How would I go about doing that Hobbes?

And it dosent seem to be lag as in net lag but more of video card lag. Even in a scant with feck all people around it is major laggy and I constantly get a 3-5 second pause when entering building or going through doors.

Needless to say Iv taken up sniping to avoid this but good sniping spots are hard to find but are cool with the usual no brain zerg tatics TR uses :) Charging a sniper from one end of a bridge to the other is just not smart :)

    Remember, better Dead than Red.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

I'll dig out the details and post on a seperate thread.

I did this for Neocron and because some parts of the game are fps based my car now moves like it's got nitro injectors. :)

Mbroaders. my opinion doesn't seem very popular, but my experience has been the following.

    1) Cost. Paying a sub after paying for the game seems a little cheeky. 12.99 a month isn't nothing (on top of your adsl)

    2) Gameplay. My personal experience has been the planetside is nowhere near as good as bf1942. Its interface is finicky, it can take ages to get into the action, and when you do it's very dodgy quake style gameplay. And if you get killed you have to rebuy armour, weapons, respawn etc etc etc

    3) Levels system. The game is designed to award people who play the most. If you're on 24/7 you get lots of xp, then get access to better weapons etc, which puts you at an advantage over those of us with jobs/wives!

    4) All in all, it's a fancy arcade game. For me BF1942 is consistently better on all counts: no subscription, better gameplay, better graphics, and you can drop in and play without fear of being outstripped by some 14 year old playing 16 hours a day.

    My advice? steer well clear.

The game incorporates an element of role playing, therefore levelling up WILL effect your ability, you should have known this before you bought the game... oh yea you didnt know anything about the game except the name when you got it :p

Its an MMO, you think them servers are cheap to run? not forgetting the tech support.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭adnans

thats the difference between a normal fps and a MM (massively multiplayer) fps game. it takes place over a large playing area split into continents and not on a handful or more smaller maps.

subscription itself pays for new content (new vehicles, weapons, staff etc.) and better service (servers, etc.) for all players. what happens when makers of bf1942 want to release new content? they of course re-package it and give it a name like Road to Rome and the upcoming Secret Weapons, and you're expected to pay for it.

That does sound a bit queer..

I think the initial purchase price of a MMOG should be lower. Then the sub is more acceptable.

As regards magpies comments and the responses, He's giving his opinion on how he found the game, comparing and contrasting with bf1942 as a reference. His comments all make sense to me and are valid. The rest of you guys just keeping repeating statements from the box packaging. What are _your_ opinions on the game, and _your_ opinions on his opinions. Or haven't you guys done debating or english essays in school yet?

I found Planetside very enjoyable, but it doesn't give instant gratification if you just drop in. I played it for a few hours on a number of occasions, and didn't see much action, it was still funny though. I'm not sure it has the longevity that should be expected from a subscription based MMOG.

    just steppin' in....

I am very interested in that game... but the review on gamespot wasn't very positive.

Please: Can someone post hers/his own experience, like flav does it?

What is the irish retail-price for the game?

I think 12.99 per month is _very_ expensive, even for a MM Game and if there are the technical problems who throw you out, I wouldn't be happy.

    thanks

Get used to it. The person who worked out that pricing scheme is the same person who will be pricing SWG.

Again why I like NC it's 6-month fee is the same as a boxed game and works out about €9 a month.

As for fees. The developers have to pay for servers to run the games, employees to maintain the games. Also all games update thier servers with new content/missions/monsters/lands (unless it's EQ in which you have to buy another box).

Of all the games I've played I would say that Asherons Call had the best content updates versus any other game. NC maybe second (content comes monthly to 2 monthly but new stuff all the same). UO tended to just have bugfixes and minor updates.

Your are right, _but_: I play a lot of BF1942.
The Servers are free, the game is around 50€ and every 6 or seven months there is a add-on (which is only in Ireland 40.- Euros.... Just for an example: In Germany you have to pay 15.- Euros for that, but that is a different story).

So, even BF is much more limited it is much cheaper...

But maybe we should open a new thread for this discussion.

so tell me your experience: Is Planetside the money worth?

Its very good fun I have to say. Iv been playing Vanu with the SA Goons and NC with some boards.ie ppl and its great craic. Nothing like having a 10 Reaver GoonSquad group strike terror into anyone we encounter :)

You need a decent PC for this game. A minimum of 512MB and at least a ISDN line. If you dont have at least these do not buy this game as you will hate it with a passion.

Im having lots of fun as a sniper atm and just causing generial havok towards those TR scumbags. With the promise of new vechicles and cobat encounters this game could wrap up the online FPS market or it could go down in a ball of flames.

If you like squad based combat with a nice sci fi twist this will be right up your alley. But you will need a credit card to play.

Hobbes and others are spot on about SW:G being at least the same price as PS, but I personaly would bet on it being closer to €20 per month due to the big name attached to it.

It's Lord British (now known as Holocron). He had a famous quote some time ago where he said they underpriced UO when they first started it and should of charged $15-$20 for an account back then.
Your are right, _but_: I play a lot of BF1942.

Servers are run by players, add-ons are done by players or by the gaming company (in which case you pay for it).

BF1942 is also not an MMO. You simply can't get 1000 players onto a server without some serious funding.

I got my first taste of online action last night. I was totally blown away :)

It took a few minutes trying to get stuff sorted out (still haven't found the online training grounds for TR though). I was in a squad inside of 10 mins and on my way as a door-gunner on a Galaxy dropship. Felt like a 'nam door-gunner :D

Ended up in some pretty hairy stuff with about a hundred(ish) people, vanu & tr (my affiliation). Air units dogfighting and doing strafing runs, tank battle stuff and generally lots of fix emplacement assault.

I have experienced NOTHING like this :)

What is the irish retail-price for the game?

49.99 in Game. I ordered it off play.com for 24.99 sterling with free shipping.

That's 12.99 in US dollars. Works out as 11.10 euro

I just got the game myself, the gameplay so far imo is excellant and on 56k it can handle small to medium battles, but large ones are brutal for lag, nearly impossible to play.
