We all know that Dusty is over the hill and that Monty is just about pushing it but....

Well what is the definition of old online, just saw something on IRC refering to "young geeks", what is actually young for someone online and what is old and when do you hit that middle aged streak ?

Young would be me, at 15.

Old online in my books would be anything over 30. The middle age would be around 25 I suppose.

My question is, does Old Online hold any similarity to Old Skool?
And what age is too old for the online life

i'd say Old Online is probably over the 30 mark at the moment.

This figure will keep increasing as the years go on as my generation(late teens, early 20's) get older so i will never reach "Old Online" age. :)

Perhaps, or as the internet gets more and more prevalent and becomes widely available in primary schools, younger and younger kids will be online each year.

So relatively speeking you'll hit old age must sooner than us current oldies!

If you're 30 or so it's not so bad, but if you're 80 then it's kinda weird.

why is it weird ? is it not cool that we can all surf regardless of age or whatever.

I am sure there has to be a 65 year old on boards somewhere ?

But of there is, he/she is certainly not going to reply to this thread, (they'd be freaked out)

    I'm 21.

I'm considered a young upstart whippersnapper by some.

I'm considered an old crusty by others.

    It's all relative.

But there are more people calling me old than young.

im thinking that as the 25-30 generation gets older, the first real generation to use the internet, gets older the upper age on "old on the web" will go up. of course the lower age on the web will go down aswell. im 19 and have been surfing for 4 years, there are 15 year olds who have been doing the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,335 ✭✭✭Cake Fiend

Are we talking physical age here or wha?

I'm 21, which would be younger than a lot of boardsters, but I've spent about 11 years of those 21 online in one way or another (dial-up BBS etc).

When I reach 30 I'll consider myself oldskool rather than old ;)

Feck it when i'm 65 I don't want no free bus pass
I want the goverment to install a nice T3
so I can piss myself in some new group
err i mean piss my last away in some newsgroup :)

    Emboss

well im 30 and ive been using teh intraweb since i was about 21 i suppose. I dont intend stopping using it because i hit a certain age.

On another note theres a lot of people older than me using boards (our glorious leader devore for one :) Jesus, i think he is anyway) I know of at least 2 who are over 40 and 1 who is over 60.

    Bah, yer all whippersnappers.

It's funny, because it kinda breaks the age barrier, god knows I've pld ut2k3 with some 60yr olds who kicked serious arse and I don't intend "going offline" at any stage...

Neo - Let us know when you plan your "internet retirement"
that's one of the funniest things I've ever heard - If your 80 it's weird, why? Because your not 80 and haven't seen an 80yr old use the net before? Geez, some people lead sheltered lives or don't see much further than their own nose...

In the old days it used to take 12 clicks to ban someone.... and so if you got baned you were "12-clicked"

The thing is though when i turn 30 there will be alot more 30 year olds using the internet and there will still be alot of people older than me using it like you samson which means the average age will go up and 30 won't seem so "old" to be on the net.

Maybe i'm wrong...i'm still young and naive...just over 10 years to go before i hit so called old age :)

    Old or new?

    You are old if:
You took a stand on the frames/no frames issue.

    You are very old if:
You used mosaic as browser of choice.

    You are ancient if:
You had a use for a BBS.

    You are young if:
You don't know why you shouldn't use hotmail.

Well I'm ancient then. And at 19 too. Funny, I don't feel ancient.

To be fair though, I was using the internet before most people in ireland knew what it was. It's not what you know, it who you know :p
