Has anyone heard the recent news on Seve Ballesteros. Apparently he's become "eccentric". Recently he was disqualified from a competiton for changing the scores on the scorebord in the clubhouse. He is trying to recapture his magic game however he cant play to the standard anymore and his behaviour is becoming more erratic. Has anyone heard any more news on this and whats your opinion?

AFAIK, he felt he was being 'victimised' for slow play... he claimed the ref was on his case since the 2nd hole of a round... eventually he was given a 1 stroke penalty for slow play - he refused to accept this penalty, altered his card to reflect this and hence signed for an incorrect score = disqualification.

He commentates on the BBC a bit now... he's a bit dreary IMO as a commentator.... he always seems to suggest a safe approach... like 2 putts is good here... aim for the middle of the green type stuff. He certainly can't hack it on the course any more... he's better off in the commentary box.

I still believe Seve has a good run left in him maybe a couple of events where he finishes under par or maybe a top 20 finish. Look at Fred Couples for example? Look at Des Smyth? Look at Nick Faldo? They all have a had a new lease of life so I back Seve to reproduce some of his old magic!

    Ian Baker-who? ;)
I don't think that faldo, couples or smyth ever 'lost' it to the extent that seve seems to. There's a difference between naturally not being so competitive anymore and a complete loss of form like what he seems to have undergone.

And what about Watson, Pavin etc.. I just think that seve's time as a player is over - he's not old enough to be a Palmer type wheel-em-out-for-a-wave type guy yet but he can't seem to cut it either.

Its a pity alright, his short game is still great on a good day, but he can't drive for nuts anymore. It must be frustrating to know you have something there but not enough...and I suspect he's just too old to reinvent his game. I wonder will Lee Westwood or David Duval recover?

    Mike.

Sadly i think Westwood is finished. Duval has a good bit left in him though imho.

I heard Duval had something like vertigo...? affects his co-ordination or something...?
I saw him hit a practise shot on the 18th in mount juliet last summer - he was under the big tree which was probably 230+ yards away... we wern't sure if it was him at first but once he took the swing you could tell it was him... and then the ball pitched about 8 feet away and rolled out to 4 feet... such a classy player.

Westwood is a lot like Clarke IMO - loads of natural ability/talent but not enough determination/fight/courage. I prefer Harrington for that reason - he may have less skill but he has better application.

I actually took a look at this thread and a few others around the time of his death, interesting reads TBH. I suppose one lesson to be learnt, is predicting the future is far from an exact science.
