i've been thinking about learning Flash in my spare time, maybe
over the summer. now, i know there are loads of sites with
tutorials/examples... but i'd like to get a book aswell.

so, can anyone recommend some good books on Flash?
preferably something personal experience has told you is a good
one. is there much or any difference in Flash 5 or Flash MX??

    thanks in advance guys.

    anto.

The Flash bible is reputedly very good for beginners/experienced users:

    Flash5 vs FlashMX
    The main differences are:
    1. MX allows you to write ActionScript (Flash's internal language) in a more open, notepad style environment. Scripting in Flash5 is more cumbersome as you can't cutn'paste more than one line of code at a time.

    2. MX allows you to import images/avi on the fly whereas F5 movies have the images embedded which increases file size.

Having said all that, I still use F5 for small projects.

I have found the "Sams teach yourself......." very good. Have used them for Photoshop 7, Dreamweaver MX, Flash Mx and Actionscript.
