More suffering in store for Villa supporters :) at least this means we won't have to see his truly pathetic punditry attempts any more - the guy makes Frank Stapleton look intelligent.

Hmmmmmmm, wonder how he will do without any money to spend. Serious challenge for any manager at Villa now..

for a chap who likes to spend money this is a very strange move, i look forward to seeing how this works out...

Doug to Dave - "Now lad, here's a million pounds..and I'll give you another million in a year and another the years after that. BUT only on the understanding that you spend no more than your salary every season on players..."

I think its instructive that none of the potential hot shot managers of tomorrow in the First Divison have taken the job, O'Learys job will simply be to talk a good game, tread water in the League and get a decent Cup run...

    Mike.

    Nightmare

But then again we will get to see if he really is "good with the kids" or not. I guess we can expect one bigish signing to stop the moaning (probably a free).

Am i the only one getting a sinking feeling?:(

In fairness, you can't really blame O'Leary for the financial problems at Leeds. He was the football manager, not the general manager. They gave him money to spend, and he spent it. What manager wouldnt? Also, most of his purchases well fairly good ones, considering the over priced market at the time.

When O'Leary first took charge at Leeds, he brought them to the semi final of the Uefa Cup with a squad of basically youth players. I think Villa could have done alot worse than O'Leary.

Also, kinda off the point, but its great to see that there is an Irish manager in the premiership again. :)

Obviously a very bad attempt at humour on my part. Goon = Gooner = Gunner = Arsenal ...

    never mind..I'm going to bed.

    Zzzz...

He's going to have to sell in order to buy. I don't see many clubs looking to buy Villa outcasts. It's going to be tough for him but we'll see how it goes.

Dunno i think he could surprise a few people and actually do well!

    Hear hear.

I think the lad will do very well with them. Granted he won't have any funds to work with but with a decent cup run that could change. Villa are a top ten team and shouldn't have dropped so far down. I hope O 'Leary does well there and poroves his critics wrong

I think alot of you are being very harsh. When George Graham left Leeds they were only a couple of places above relegation. O leary brought them up to Uefa qualification part of the table without spending much money. He seems to be a good motivator and is quite strong at getting the most out of mediocre players. Yes the book was a mistake but hopefully he has learnt from that. As for the money he spent, that was not money wasted, when he left those players he bought were still at the club, in fact the sale of Rio to United and Woodgate to Nexcastle has covered almost half of the total of what O leary spent. After Oleary left Venebals could not maintain what Dave had achieved even before the sale of players. I think he will do weel at Villa, and I wish him all the best.

I dislike O'Leary intensely, but I wouldn't argue with his record. For all the bull**** he comes out with about sandwiches, his record would suggest he's an accomplished manager. He achieved consistent top 4 finishes with Leeds, and got to the CL semi. On the flip side, he spent 90million and won nothing, but such is life. When he spoke of Aan Smith "only being a baby", and needing to "calm down", you can be sure that in the dressing room he was telling him to give it more of the same. His media skills are possibly worse than Stephen Kenny at Bohs, but he footballing record will matter more to Villa fans, or should.

David O Leary is getting 70 grand a year isnt he? Thats ridiculous, he should get a tenner a week instead. I ****en hate him. He is an attention seeker. And he wrote a book cos he is a moany bitch. Irish or not. the guy is a tool.

He's getting FAR more than 70k a year, all permiership managers are on over 200k a year + match win bonous' + place finish bonous + bonous for CL/uefa cup spot + sponser's apperences....

Let's see how he does, eh? Apparently he's not the most humble of people, but I'm interested to see how he fairs with no money. Gregory was a total freak, just look at what happened at Derby; Taylor is old school and was only given the job because Ellis was too mean to spend money on someone better. I liked O'Leary at Leeds, or rather I liked what he accomplished. Did he get 4th, 4th and 7th in his 3 full seasons? Not bad by any stretch of the imagination. It seems he lost the dressing room because of the bowyer/woodgate trail and his ill-timed book... also, not making the champions league shook an already unsteady financial ship, and his relationship with Publicity Peter Risdale deteriorated. We'll see his calibre when he has to manage a team with no money....

One of me mates is a Villian and to be honest I was really hoping they'd go down this season. Doug Ellis has got to be the worst chairman in the premiership as far as ambition goes... maybe this signals a change?

On the Leeds connection I thought I heard Lee Bowyers name being mentioned on the radio today in connection to Villa, he wont do them any harm if he remmebers not to assualt civvies...to think 'Pool might have paid 9 million for him!

    Mike.

I think David O'Leary is a good appointment at Aston Villa but I do think there is a problem and that is the man upstairs Doug Ellis, thats my opinion.
I believe O'Leary will bring Villa back into the UEFA Cup straight away next season.

Yes you are. :) I didn't think O'Leary would touch Ellis with a barge pole tbh. He is easily the best man for the job out of those who were available and I'm fcuking delighted he's in at Villa now.

I thought everyone knew the real reason O'Leary left Leeds? They were starting to sell all his players etc etc and instead of resigning and getting peanuts, he let them fire him and got a windfall (eventually) - smart move. Then he waited a year for a big job and took it.

For all his waffle I think he's a good manager with potential. If he can at least get Villa playing good top-half football and get the crowds up I'll be happy.

in late 01 When gregory was in charge we were top of the league. as soon as GT was appointment we went into a dismal run of form and finshed 8th. we got a stronger squad for 02/03 yet we only finished 16th. As hard as he tried graham taylor had not done a good job at vila park. i believe that if we utilise the players that we have at our disposal correctly we can register a top 6 finish. doing so will encourage doug ellis to make more cash available to strengten the sqaud even further. O`leary will make good use of the likes of Vassel Barry Gudjonnson hitzlesperger Wittingham Cooke etc. he could also help already established players like, Angel, Alpay, Hadji, Hendrie, De la Cruz and others. some players like Leonhardsen, taylor, Kinsella, Kachoul, Crouch, Boulding and Wright are a waste of money and should be disposed off as they are Inhibition the emergenve of young talent.

We could go on forever about the team and the managers but Villa will always underachieve as long as Ellis & Co. pull the strings. I'll dance on his grave the cnut.
