Moving to a foreign country without having any experience of it is a very big step. Check out with the Canadian Embassy if there is the possibility of a work / holiday visa program.

Best advice I can give is don't do what one of my mates did when we went to go to Canada via car from the States.
Don't leave your passport behind you or they won't let you out of border control. Still makes me laugh......

Emm, forgetting a passport, I'll try to remember that. Mad thing is, it is the type of thing I could do. What happened to your friend, just stopped from crossing the border???

They stopped him in border control, told him that they couldn't let him into Canada but also that they couldn't let him back into the States because he had no proof that he was entitled to be there. They said he'd have to wait there for up to 4 days while they contacted the relevent authorities.
They seemed serious but after 15 mins decided to let us all leave and pretend that we hadn't crossed the border.
We drove back to Buffallo, booted him out of the car and the rest of us went off to Niagra Falls. When we got back to the campsite we found him collapsed by the tents after drinking all the beer. He did manage to get firewood and other useful things. Would have been nice if we all made it to the falls but so it goes. Makes the experience more memorable.

I went to stay in Montreal for two months about four years ago. It is actually quite an impressive city but the thought of having to wake up at the crack of dawn to defrost your car to get to work, for 4 months of every year would kill me.

On the plus side, it's incredibly cheap and cosmopolitan and there's loads to do.Education and health care facilities are excellent but the snow...

Yeah been to Montreal, fab city, superb restaurants and cafes..
but its bloody cold... was there in October last year and nearly froze me nuts off...

Although if you can afford it and are lucky enuff you can rent an apartment in a block thats connected to the underground tunnel system and hope ur place of work is also connected so you never have to go outside when at all.. dont even need a coat :D

Or you could skip the snow and cold experienced by most of Canada during the winter and come to the West Coast - Vancouver!

It is consistently ranked as one of the best cities in the world to live in, has a great climate and lots of things to do. We moved here from Ireland three years ago and like it a lot.

Talk to the Canadian High Commission in London about emigrating. I believe it is possible to get a one-year work visa if you want to come out for a short-term look, though I don't know how hard it is to obtain one.

Vancouver, emmm, I'ev heard of the firework display there every September and it is a place I do intend to see. :)

Thanks for the tip on the Canadian high Commission, I'll check it out.

Thanks to you aswell Toxicpaddy for that website you passed on, full of usefull info.

Glad to help Poppygirl, best of luck with whatever you decide to do and keep us posted...

Cerebus, was in Vancouver for a few days and it seems like a fantastic place to live. Whats the work situation like there? Are there many IT jobs?

The Canadian economy seems to be doing quite well - but high-tech jobs are pretty thin on the ground in British Columbia/Vancouver. Things do seem to be picking up though, so who knows...

It might be worth your while to check Monster.ca or some of the other Canadian jobsearch sites if you are interested in seeing what is available. I can probably dig up some more references if you would like to dig deeper.
