    Hi All,

I need a bit of help making a decision. Myself and 4 mates are signing up for BB soon with VIA and want to invest in fairly decent hardware..

We have a 6 computer network, all P4's and up and are failry big net users. We want a DSL modem with a built it switch/router, firewall and possibly a Wireless Access Point support b and g standards.

The BB will be used for net surfing, P2P fil sharing, gaming and XBOX Live. Any suggestions anyone????

Also, has anyone experience BB in dundalk yet and if so where r ya in dundalk and what connections are you getting?

    Any help would be appreicated!!!!

Cool, is the Linksys router all you need or is their a requirement to purchase a xDSL modem as well?

Linksys is an all in one solution.

DSLModem with RJ11 port, router/switch with 4xRJ45, and slot for wireless pcmcia card (which amazon helpfully supply for free !!!!).

If you purchase this unit pm me and I will forward the latest firmware for it (it's not on their site or available for download).

It did initially take me two evenings to get the router configured for Xbox live ( I was unsure whether I could even get the service), and was trying every combination of solutions to try and access it.

But with the new firmware it works like a dream!!! Plug and Play, no configuration.

Wireless Access Point works well I have it in the hallway and gives coverage throughout the house

    Hi

I have noticed the newer Linksys models coming on to the market soom, i.e. those that support the wirless G standard at 55mbps. Do any of those offer a similar package to the unit you recommended?

no DSL modem and est retail of $240

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008WM9J/qid%3D1053599254/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-6724890-2317653

Plus you will need to get compatible client cards.

Do you really need to move data that fast wirelessly on a home network ?

To be honest, its not a requirement, more of a want. Also have the desire to be somewhat future proof, as impossible as that is!!!!

Been checking the following and not sure if it has the modem built in. Can you shed any light on it?

nice bit of kit. nice price. doesn't include modem.

again might be cheaper to order from amazon.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008DOYO/qid=1053601485/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1_1/202-6697507-2297437

even with shipping should come to less than €200 inc VAT.

    go to http://www.dslreports.com/sitesearch

and search model number ( WRT54G ) to see issues that others are currently having.....seems quite a few. Should be sorted through firmware upgrade.

Also check http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/review/7/2/3187.html for notes on coverage of 802.11g

Jaysus ya have given me some quality info there!!! Really appreicate it.

We have decided to go for the one you have, seems to be the handiest all round it seems.

Any specific issues I should know about or is it all plain sailing? Configuration shouldnt be an issue, we are all 4th year computing students.

The only issues I had were prior to the firmware upgrade with the upnp function not working correctly. eg I had to manually configure the upnp uniports for access to xbox live. Also assiging the Xbox I.P. to the DMZ. Also Windows XP could'nt detect the gateway (as it should through upnp). These are resolved through firmware. Can't alter the MTU setting, fixed at default of 1400.

These are what I've uncovered (had it less than a week).

My concerns are that if the device breaks crashes. I have no dsl, seeing as everything is in one box.......just a thought

Yeah i understand what ya mean regarding the all in one box thing, always s tayed away from home entertainment stuff that offered the same thing (Tv/Video Combo)

Mind you I am quite satisfied with the Linksys gear from what I have seen so far. Also, upnp, is that Universal Plug and Play by any chance?

    Luke

Universal Plug and Play = upnp = yup!

Yeah....I'm happy with it now....at first I was ready to throw it out the feckin' window, as I couldn't get it working with xbox.

The homenetworking was simple, but make sure you get the firmware upgrade!!!

pm me your email I'll mail it on....file to big to attach to boards.

You can flash the firmware prior to having DSL. Connect using the ethernet cable and point your browser to 192.168.1.1

This is the config page for the gateway.

You have to do a reset after upgrading, cause if not, you won't be able to log into the configuration page after the upgrade.

Xbox Live works a treat thanks to the upgrade.

If you need any pointers with the unit, I'll help all I can.

    Enjoy.

Let me know the email address you're going to use before you sign up for Xbox Live so I can 'recommend' you for the service.
