which version of Whiskey In The Jar do you think is better? for me it has to be Thin Lizzy, although i quite like the metallica version.

Even as a big metallica fan I still ahve to say thin Lizzy. Metallica left out the intro riff.

    Metallica's one is more energetic.

Jesus - this is a hard one. Two of my fav. bands.

Um, ok - the Lizzy version is the Lizzy version which, tbh, can't be beaten for sheer impact.

But I must say, as far as covers go, the Metallica cover is one of those rather infrequent instances where a cover can be as good as the original, albeit slightly different and somewhat more "chunky" feeling

Thin Lizzy's simply because of the intro and metallica got some of the words wrong >:C)

    Lizzy, most certainly.

I voted for the Thin Lizzy version, its the first one I heard and to be honest it has the better intro.

Plus the mistakes in the lyrics on the Metallica version.

I voted Atari on this one. But you do all realise of course that Thin Lizzy's version is technically also a cover?

I 'm sure metallica were covering lizzys version, i doubt if they listen to much irish folk music

Plus the mistakes in the lyrics on the Metallica version.

There was?? I only heard it a few times and it put my teeth on edge.

Its a cover of a cover of a cover anyway, and like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy, each one is less clear, less distinct....and crap quality.

I should have voted Atari Jaguar, but Lizzy? Definitely.

    aye, who sang it originally?

the dubliners did it before lizzy I think but it isn't their song either is it?

It's actually an ancient folk song - going back a couple of centuries apparently.

cool, i thought it was an old irish song.. wouldn't have guessed it'd be that old though

well - it is Irish. I dunno about the age, except for a mate of mine told me about it. He seemed quite sincere and he like shis music, so ...

I have it on good authority that it's several centuries old. There's written records of it in the 18th century, apparently.

I think the changed lyrics are for copyright, as alot of the lyrics(possibly all of them) on garage inc have been changed slightly. Eg: Astronomy: Cassanova in the original, desdanova in Metallica, Die die die my darling: Dead end guy in the original, Dead end soul in the Metallica, et cetera.

Although Metallica did a good cover, I still prefer Thin Lizzy's version.

whiskey in the jar was written over a hundred years ago.its an irish folk song so thin lizzy cant be credited with it.In the proper sond its "well famed kerry mountains". i voted lizzy anyway

Thin Lizzy i mean was it even worth a poll to decide somthing as simple as that....Metallica's version was no where near as Outstanding as T.L's.. IMO

Thin Lizzy's version by a long way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

the folk version is so different it may as well have been an origional song.
Anyhow, the thin lizzy version owns. Metalica suck ass, well the last couple of albums anyhow. Dont mean to turn this into a flame, but some things just gotta be said:ninja:

Thin Lizzy hands down. I'm a huge fan of both bands, but

MetallicA's ****ty 'hardcore' americanized version of a Thin Lizzy song?
Or Thin Lizzy's version of traditional Irish ballad?

Metallicas version makes my skin crawl with terror. i hate it. ihs voice aint made for whiskey in the jar. believe me. i like metallica and all but just not that. anyhow. if you go into a pub and you hear whiskey in the jar played by a band. which are you gonna hear. whiskey in the jar aint a metal song so dont make it one.
