How do you define Nu-Metal?

Okay, I have no idea how to define Nu-Metal. I mean, KoRn literally created the genre, yet bands who sound like them arent dubbed nu-metal. People say that a nu-metal band is a band that has turntables in it, yet KoRn don't! Some say that it's a 'so called rock-band' who make it high in the charts. Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit being good examples of this. But going back to my original question, what is nu-metal?

    CRAP

They are like manufactured pop bands but they take about two guitar lessons and use the same 10 power chords over & over over & over over & over over & over over & over over & over over & over over & over

consisting of less than 5 riffs really, most of the time just verse, chorus, breakdown, and sometimes intro. also no solos. there will always be a couple of exceptions but thats generally it.

appealing to the kiddies is also trademark. pop music does that too, very easy to draw comparisons between the two. i mean, how much better was "Bob the Builder" than "Rollin"?

ffs, tbh i'm getting sick of people responding like that. Granted, I don't like (most) nu-metal, but I'm just saying that makes you sound about 5. In FACT, I know people who listen to nu-metal who when asked, insult it far more than anyone else to cover their asses ;)

Youre all wrong. Stop the hating. move on. if you dont like it. so what. same 10 power chords, over and over? hardly.
new metal bands from the last 8years have progressed heavy music further than it has been pushed in the last 20.
Alternative tunings, Extra Strings to add more dimensions to the music. Bringing in new instruments. Lots more, but im sick of this topic.

i agree with you there bombidol

What does an extra string do? It's the same as any other guitar. Just a deeper note. It doesn't make them more.....artistic or whatever you siad. I do have to agree about the lazyness of most nu-metal bands, when most of them do have potential to make good music (Anyone see the bands on Met Icon?).

Most "new" tunings either make things easier to play, or make crap pieces of music, sound like heavier crap pieces of music. Instead of down tuning, just use the bassist. That's what he's there for. (just my opinion)
And personally, I don't think new tunings and extra strings are as innovated as wah pedals and talkboxes and all the other things pushing the boundries in the past.
But that said, I do like quite a bit of Nu metal.

Bull****, Most "new" tunings open up new combinations of Notes and chords. And also open up a wider range of lower notes and chords. As for getting the bassist to play the notes instead, WTF? do you even play guitar? The bassist has the same range of notes if he plays a G and i do, its the same note just a different frequency.
I just think that a lot of new bands are opening up the music genres and throwing other stuff into them. Doesnt have to be Metal, look at Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys, they incorporate Punk music and Traditional Irish music.
Im too tired to fight, lol

I mean so many bands down tune guitars because along with lower noters there is a bassier tone, and I'm saying they shoud just turn up the bass for bass frequencies.

It seems the purpose of a 'Discussion Board' eludes you, Xen.

No the purpose of rationising a style of music which is inherently different and no one can pin down and rather than lazy journos trying to describe a band use 'nu-metal' is absurd.
i mean every one gets lumped as nu-metal rather than how they sound.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

But arent Morbid Angel Nu Metal????;) :D

Its pretty hard to define most things, just have a little image in your head as to what it is and live with it :p

i guess one way to identify a lot of nu-metal is that most nu-metal songs will have some sort of a rap/hip hop theme to them eg limp bizkit, linkin park. But I have to say i don't like it that much
 :ninja: it just sounds too .... new. I guess its hard for somepeople who listen to older music to accept new bands

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

You don't know what you're talking about. I've heard you play Bombidol, and no offence, but you are mediocre at best; and your band.....get a click track for your drummer would be the first step towards sounding older than 15.

    Oh shut up, idiot.
Reading the above none of you know much about nu metal, basically every one is saying Linkin Park and mentioning Limp Bizkit, No wonder you guys hate it, go out and find out a bit more and then come back and rant on about how much you hate, its just pathetic, no ****ing knowledge and just yap after yap .

Korn never really invented nu metal.

    Check out these following bands,
I dont know if they are "proper" nu metal or not

    Taproot.
    Glassjaw.
    Linea 77.
    Deftones.

And then come back and say something constructive.
    seriously sick of it.

And i just got a lend of Hoobastanks album and its pretty good, who gives a **** if its even manufactured, if it sounds good its good.
musicians that are not really musicians. they are crap.

Thats an uneducated voice speaking, tell me this what songs have they copied ? What teenage angst ? do u even know the meaning of angst ? i suggest you back up your comments, cause so far uve just been speaking nothing but sterotypical bull****, teenage angst ? the word just came in because u just seen some kid with a linkin park hoody .
I mean, do u even know how linkin park formed, there old band name ? Do u know Hahn old band ?

What are you even trying to say ? pathetic .

I think your comment gives away everything there is to know about YOU.
Gay ? gay, thats a sexuality, isnt it ? Music genre have a sexuality ? What age are you ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Oh, **** off the lot of you!

Here's an idea: Start another thread about nu-metal when you're all old enough to discuss it like adults. None of this idiotic "It's gay"/"They're not musicians" bull****.

Untill then, everyone go out and listen to Withering Surface, and Earthtone9.
