Just got this, and I noticed something very, very disturbing...

Danny's little invention is missing from the film!?
Well, not actually, I mean you can still see it there, and he even goes and tells Withnail that he can keep it, but his explanation of what it is and what it does is completely cut out. And a lot of the dialogue in the scene doesn't make sense without it; "I thought you were in the bottle business?"

For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a fairy liquid bottle with some tubing. Its for when the cops want to do a urine sample on someone, they have someone else's (Ie. Not a stoner) piss in the bottle, and can let it out on queue...

Now, I understand very well that this could have given some people bad ideas, but I hate it when films are cut, and it kinda ruined the scene to an extent.

probably one of the most unfunny, over-rated, over-hyped, pop-art films i have ever seen.

Its a problem very specific to Independant DVD releases,Different distributers use different Theatrical cuts for their DVD releases so if it was cut for a say German market stuff deemed inapropriate for a german audience would be removed.
The problem is seriously bad in the Hong Kong DVD market where whole scenes can be changed and even unrelated scenes from other movies added by various distributers. In one movie whose name escapes me they added a "dream" fight sequence with Jackie chan from a totally different movie

Angelwhore who was the Distributer so we can name and shame them?

    Call the taste-police! :)

But back to the topic. AW, did they also cut out the bit where Danny explains how he gonna invent a 'doll wot ****s itself' too? And the bit at the end where Withnail tries to use dannys invention? Surely all these bits wouldn't make sense without the explaination scene?

Please god tell me the camberwell carrot bit is still in there?

Firstly Beruthiel hunny you've been on boards long enough to know that WWMAN is a trolling tart and should be ignored :p

As regards the film I have it on DVD here and I remember that scene being on my copy (must watch it again sometime soon). I have the Criterion Collection copy from the US. I assume yours AW is the R2 release.

    Gandalf.

Dont know, I turned the film off shortly after the Danny scene, but the 'Doll wot sh*ts itself' is still there, as well as the doll with 'Voodoo Qualities'.

It was Anchor Bay, which is very odd, as the other DVDs of theirs I have and am quite pleased with.

Oh, and yes Gandalf, it is R2.

    Hi,

When Withnail & I was released on DVD it was pulled from the shelves after only a few days due to errors on the disk, it was then released again about 2 months later.

sounds like you have one of the first batch of the DVD.

    Cheers
    Will

Actually, I watched the whole thing in its entirety last night, and I must say, I think I've got a little confused...

For I found that Withnail himself explains the device in the car on the way to the cottage a couple of scenes later. So its still in there.

    And for Pigman's sake...

The Camberwell Carrot is still intact.
As is Withnail's attempt to use the invention.
