I have planted some basil with my tomatoes. One plant has died on me and another has developed holes in its leaves. Does anybody know what I can do? Or even whats wrong?

    I'm very new to gardening.

    Are they in a glasshouse?

The one dead could be from 'damping off' - a type of fungal attack (beware of over watering)...
Also, the plants are also susceptible to frost so make sure they are not exposed on cold nights...

Holes in the leaves is most probably a sign of slugs…

A herb I like with tomatoes is Oregano – dead easy to grow. It has a strong, peppery flavour… I use it with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and black pepper a lot (in bruschetta & as a kind of marinade for veg on a bbq…)
