Broadband in Dun Laoire?

I've been offline at home for quite a while and figuring out the best way to get back online. I live in a flat in Dun Laoire (near Georges Street) and I'd like opinions on the best of what (to me) seems a bewildering amount of broadband solutions.

Ideally I'd like to pay 100 yoyo's or less a month and I'd ideally like a 256 or above connection.

Anyone else in the area got broadband? Any companies I shouldn't talk to?

Oh and kudos to the great FAQ's both here and in IOFFL, saved me a lot of time getting details. Details are good, I just want opinions from people who actually use it.

    hey amp
at a guess i would say that netsource.ie are your best option
you should be able to get some DSL as long as your line passed
ring eircom and ask them to test it as if you were going to
get eircom ADSL and see what they say.

what do you want it for amp ?
you useing games and web or you downloading loads ?
if your downloading a lot the netsource.ie RADSL comes with no
    cap unlike the eircom/esat offers but it's a 48/1 ratio :(
the ping is ok on RADSL about 35ms for games.

if games then picking a isp that has a cap mgiht be better
when lots more people are on the same Dslam
and your shareing 1 512K line with 48 others
as your a bit less of a chance of downloads from others
    killing your ping.

I have the 1mb from eircom with no cap.
but thats costs over €200 a month

Try this thread for info about each offer

I am up and running on the Eircom start pack on the Dun Laoghaire exchange. 512kb down to me and 128 (I think upstream) for 55 euros a month. Works pretty good and along with wireless running around the house makes access a breeze.

Check out the Eircom web site for details.

Ah, netsource, formally known as Via, with whom I had a previous free dialup with. It's just ironic enough for me to go for :)

I'm not entirely sure, tbh as the connection itself will effect what exactly I do online. I didn't use to play games online, but that was more to do with the fact that 56k is just too lame to play most games.

But I seriously doubt that ping times will be of concern to me. I just don't take online gaming seriously enough.

I probably will be downloading a lot of stuff, like drivers and game demo's and other highly legitimate bits of software so all in all, downloads is more important than Gaming to me.

Hmmm yeah, I think netsource is my front runner then. I'll check them out. I'm generally quite patient when it comes to downloading. I once downloaded Corel Linux (370mb's) over a weekend on 56k.

    Yikes.

    Cheers muchly!

well if your going to play games then netsource.ie might have
bad pings when all 48 people are signed up to your DSLAM

as for dl speed most people seem to be saying about 25-30K dl
for RADSL it is sold at 256K-512K download (max 60K a sec dl)
speed but seems most people can't get the max speed.

if your downloading a lot then there is no chance of extra charge
for going over a bandwith limit like with eircom(4gb)/esat(5gb).
so far eircom/esat do not seem to be chargeing for people who
have gone over it. but that might happne when the DSLAM starts
    to get busyer

+ netsource.ie is just a 2 month deal so you can leave after that

one of the dubwan lads is in dun laoghaire, near everyman computers and the garda station (I don't know the road names). He's sharing 1mbit dsl with a couple of people. You could check the map (www.dublinwan.org, his name is Malcolm) and get 1mbit dsl for about 30 euros a month uncapped.

Don't know if you'd be interested, but for downloads it'd be cheaper and better than getting yourself one of the residential 1/2meg or less offerings.

Cool, I'm only a stones throw from the Garda Station (not that I'd be throwing stones at it, like).
