If you have an ethernet DSL modem then yes you need two nics.

If you have a USB modem then obviously all you need is a USB port.

I set up a slackware box like this.

Nic 1 : 10.0.0.30 functions as a gateway for all the internet traffic on the network.

Nic 2: 0.0.0.0 has rp_pppoe (roaring penguing point to point over ethernet) run over it, and this connects to the Alcatel ethernet modem running in bridging mode.

Then I have defined some firewalling rules and bob's your granny's toy boy, etc, etc.

However if you have a PCI ADSL modem, this device will totally replace the need for a USB or Ethernet DSL modem.

Basically a PCI ADSL modem will connect straight to the jack in the wall.

I doubt that IpCop or Smoothwall would have drivers for such a device straight out of the jar though.

You might want to think about something like Slackware or Debian.

Slackware is less of a kludge "I think", but, don't let that detract from the rabid Debian exponents.

I checked this out myself recently and neither SMoowthwall, astaro, or IPCop support PCI modems currently, although I'm sure you could compile your own drivers.
