I've been asked to be the campaign manager for a candidate in the local elections next year.
Has anyone have any experience of this and do they have any tips?

Never done anything like this. I take it thats your friend will be an independant. I'm sure the political parties run classes for their own agents.

Is there a distinction between an agent and a Campaign Manager? You should read up on ethics legislation as there are certain obligations on Candidates and agents.

I suppose at the start you need to get a core team of activists (<10) together and plan a manifesto. Then work on organisation (people to do ground work, media contacts, etc.) and funding. Then campaigning and ground work.

That's a good question about the difference between an agent and a campaign manager and they're responsibilities under legislation. I never really thought about it. And I think they're the same.
I understand that if the agent fails to file the correct returns or if there is an overspend in the campaign, the agent is liable to certain fines and even PRISON!
Jaysus, I need to read up on this before I take this further.
