Got this in an email. It is quite funny if you work it out.

MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM - NOTHING FOR BEGINNERS!!!
Not easy, especially not for non-technicians and non-scientists:
Think carefully - and DON'T cheat!!! A Mathematics Professor at the University of Barcelona constructed this mathematical problem:


A mother is 21 years older than her child, and in 6 years the child will be 5 times younger than the mother.
Question: Where is the father?????
This problem can be solved, it's not as difficult as it seems.
Don't cheat - you can solve it mathematically.
Consider the question "Where is the father" carefully.

On top of the mother, helping to conceive the child

If the mother is 21 years older than the child, then the mother is 21 when she had the child. So in 6 years time, the mother will be 27, and the child will be 5 and 1/4 years old (27/5).

But right now, it's 3/4 of a year before the child will even be born (6 - 5 and 1/4 = 3/4). And 3/4 of a year is......9 months.

So right now, the father is getting his rocks off with the mother.

V good. I think the answer was the father is + or - under/on top of the mother.

um... 27/5 is 5.4, not 5.25. Which means that the mother is (9 - 7.2) 1.8 months preggers.

So the answer is, he's crying into his pint down the local!

Or am I wrong? It's getting late...

Oh, look at that...One of those funny maths fooling your brain into thinking something else yokes.

Ya, the da is obviously quite stressed, having got his rocks off 1.8 months ago

wait a minute, 9 months is right isn't it?

mums age = x
kids age = y

1) x=y+21
2) 5(y+6)=x+6

5y+30=x+6
5y+30=y+21+6 substituting for x
4y=-3
y=-3/4

i.e. kid age is -3/4 which is -9 months which is right
