Removing items from Dock in OSX

I search in vain in the MAC help file for info on how to remove spurious stuff that I never use (Mac Mail, iChat, Apple Works etc) from the Dock.

From RTFM I can put in all the apps I use regularly. Anyone know how to take out all the stuff I don't?

    Pull them out!

As long as they aren't running at the time.

Yup, just drag them out and they dissappear in a puff of smoke! If you're dragging out an application that is running, it will hop back onto the dock temporarily as running apps get shown there. When you quit the app it will dissappear.

    Teeth.

Well don't I feel the ****ing asshole!

    :-)

thanks for that. I think I did try it after inadvertently turning one on and it just kept hopping back.
    Cheers

I yanked a couple of things off the dock on my pbook last night and they're all back again since a rebooted today. Unless doing a software update would have caused all the default apps to come back to the dock?

Possibly eth0, I never have recurring items on the dock after reboot but I cant say the same for an upgrade. Maybe only the mac apps such as mail and preview etc?

Incidentally, original poster, you can put files or folders into the dock also you know? By dragging the (for example) word document onto the dock (to the right, next to the recycle bin) you can store files after reboot. Folders, however, may not stay in the dock after reboot I'm not sure. It creates a 'shortcut' if you will, onto the dock.
