do all ADSL and RADSL products in Ireland at the moment use G.DMT ? whether it be from esat, eircom, netsource, do they all use G.DMT ?

Trying to decide which router to buy, and this would help a lot.

the real question is weather they use pppoe or pppoa, yes they use g.dmt

thx boston, still haven't a clue what G.DMT actually does ...

all the routers i looked at supported both pppoe and pppoa so wasn't too worried about that.

G.dmt allows the ADSL line to support up to 8 Mbps downstream and 1.5 Mbps upstream and requires that a device called a POTS splitter be installed.

The old adsl standard (this tech is ancient i think 1969 was the first time adsl was use) used to consist of hundreads of channels of small frequesncy and the data was snet that was, the G.Dmt consists of 3 channels one for pots one for upload and one for download. each channel is then split up into sub chnnells of 4khz each.

DMT divides the data into a collections of smaller bandwidth transmissions, each of which occupies a smaller frequency range and is optimized to maximize the data output for range.

thats why you install a splitter, it separates the frequncies below 26khz(i think) which the standard voice uses and the adsl uses from 26-1110khz. Thats my understanding of, i'm sure someone with a bite more of a technical blackground could explain more

IF I understand Boston correctly and adsl was first used/tested in 1969 that means it has taken 34yrs to become somewhat widely available to the general irish public, now that is scary

and it's still even far from available to the general irish public, scary.

thx Boston, that clears everything right up.
