Using Eircom Broadband with a router HELP!

I am trying to set up my broadband access using a Buffalo Airstream router and a D-Link modem. I can get the connection working fine when the modem is connected directly to the Ethernet port of my PC, but am having no luck when connected via the Airstream.

I have set up the modem using CHAP authentication setting and VPI/VCI 8/35. All's well there.

I have set up the router for PPPoE with CHAP authentication, user, password, etc. but keep getting the Connection Failed message. I can ping the modem from the Router, but cannot ping it from my manageing PC (sometimes I get no response, sometimes I get "negative response from <Router IP Address>).

After reading posts here, and reading the router manual umteen times, my only guess is:

    1. The router does not seem to allow me to specify VPI/VCI anywhere.
    2. The IP address of the modem is outside of the range of the IP addresses being assigned through DHCP by the router.

I'm very inexperienced with networking (started yesterday morning) and would really appreciate some pointers.

    Thanks
    Martin

    Hi

Its looks as if you are trying to Authenticate twice , Once for the modem and once for the router , I would suggest setting the modem up in "Bridge Mode" with 1483 encapsulation , Check the documentation for your modem , This will make the modem transparent and act like a wire connecting your router to your ISP so when your router tries to connect it should authenticate sucessfully , Hope this helps!

    Martin,

As declan said, your going about this the wrong way. With dsl you can connect using a few different methods. One being a modem and you connect it to a PC and away you go. The other you can have a router with a built in modem like the D-Link 504DSL which may I add is a nice little router :-), it takes the VCI/VPI settings etc.

Now the router ur using doesn't have a built in modem. So you need to give its WAN IP address the IP of your line, now if you don't have a static IP this will certainly be a pain in the arse, hence why something like the D-Link would be ideal for your situation. What mode is the modem in? does it have a private ip address that you can ping on ur lan or is it in Bridging mode?

Thank you both. The problem, as you both said, was that I was trying to authenticate twice. I have not set it to "passthrough" the router to the modem. All is working well. Thanks a lot.
