I have allways had the disadvantage of size when fighting .Im now 16 and im still only 6'6/7 .i dont mind competeing with people my own grade for kata's {forms} in compititions but when the person im fighting is a foot taller then me there's a mental disavantage. i think that the preference for catagories should be half weight half grade?

Did you mean to say half weight/half height?

In taekwondo competitions it goes by weight only and age(under 18/over 18).. It would be more evenly matched if it was divided into weight and height but it's alright dividing by weight only.. Personally I have lost a few kg's before a competition to fall into a lower weight category rather than fighting someone huge in my category.. but it only makes it less realistic again because..

If you're in a real life situation such as a street fight and you're defending your life.. you can't exactly choose your opponents weight..

also if you look at the open weight divisions where by there are no weight divisions at all , it is not always the biggest fighter that wins , for example Mike Pombero was the Grand Champion at the Irish Open in 2002 and he is small guy, but a great fighter,

In Judo, if you're a bit shorter that average, its a great advantage cuz yer centre of gravity is lower. I'm about 6' but I don't struggle too much. I don't think size has too much to do with it really. I'm about 12 stone and have completely owned bigger guys on the mat (the biggest of which is a whopping 21 stone). Its all in the mind!

See the K1 Finals last week??
Bob "The Beast" a 6'7" ex linebacker smashed by a 6'1" croatian fighter!
Style beats size-skills are your best bet!

    I think that's his weight.
in compititions but when the person im fighting is a foot taller then me there's a mental disavantage

No way he's fighting people 7'7".

I think Benny Urquidez is 5 foot 7?
And he's always been a scary fighter :)
Same height as Bruce Lee, apparently...

IMO, if you're smaller than your opponent, you may be able to move around a little bit quicker and more lithely.
Then again, I'm pretty biased since I'm only 5'6 or so...

It doesn't bother me in terms of fighting, just when it comes to you know... feeling good about how I look. Being up to people's shoulders is a little bit intimidating :ninja:

Take a step inside his kicking range, if he really is a foot taller than you he can't score a clean hit and take it to punching (you may still be able to kick). I'm 5'8 - 5'9 (not really sure, I was 17 last time I measured) and I often fought 6 ft+ and won.

Oh, that doesn't work out side of competitions (ie. some yob on the street)..... I knew someone who didn't cop that.....

Height can be a big deal in women's competition, i'm 5'6, 60kg and often come up against 5'9-6' in competition. tis a challenge to say the least... Because I do TKD, the extra height gives the other person a kicking advantage and makes it harder for you to score with the jumping punch (although I did score a nice one in the intervarsities!).

Well, what I was trying to say, is if you step in close to a taller opponent, you are too near for their height to give thema kicking advantage.

height does come into under the topic of reach - which can give u the edge in fighting

but to be a good fighter its more psychological - not about size
and usually the smaller guys are more aggressive in my experience ( 10 years martial arts , boxing + kick boxing)

    Hi,

You should use your small height as an advantage. Taller people are much easier to put of balance. They have a higher centre of gravity. So use this to your advantage and you probably will be more succesfull.
