Press Release: Golden Pedal Awards 2003 presented by Lord Mayor - Winner details

    From: Dublin Cycling Campaign
    For Immediate Use
    Tuesday 29 April
Award Location: Mansion House (Oak Room) 8-10pm Tuesday 29 April

The Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC) will tonight (Tuesday) present the Golden Pedal awards to give recognition to companies, schools and local authorities which provides the best cycling facilities for employees, students or visitors, and so encourages the use of bicycles as an acceptable means of transport. There are 5 separate categories with the supreme award 'The Golden Pedal' been given to the best category winner.

The winners of this years awards are:
    Overall Golden Pedal Winner: Oracle/Vipre
    1. Large Private Sector company: Oracle/Vipre
    2. Medium Private Sector company: Eagle Star
    3. Large Public Sector company: An Post sorting office at Knockmitten
    4. Small Public Sector company: Museum of Modem Art
    5. Design Award: Dublin City Council - Inchicore Rd.

DCC PRO David Maher explained the reason behind the awards “was to give much needed recognition to employers who provide excellent facilities for cyclists. The winner was assessed on a range of issues such as bicycle parking facilities, changing facilities, monetary inducements such as subsidies or mileage allowances, or other innovative undertakings. Oracle / Vipre who were the overall winners provide excellent bicycle parking, showers or even company bicycles and now have reached a point where 130 of Oracle's 1000 staff commute to work by bicycle every day. It is part of integrated transport plan that encourages use of public transport, car pooling as well as increased bicycle use. It really is a model to other companies and the city as a whole.”

Maher continued "this year's event has attracted over 30 different companies who have been nominated in the main by their employees and customers. Companies have begun to realise that it is win-win situation for them and their employees to provide good facilities for cyclists. The main benefits come from not just the money saved on providing expensive car parking, but having employees who will arrive on time regardless of the traffic not to mention the benefits of being healthier and less stressed".

Maher finished by stating "we are looking forward to a really great night with a food and wine reception after the award ceremony which will be hosted by the Lord Mayor Dermot Lacey. The night really is a celebration of the benefits that promoting cycling can bring to Dublin"
